    Hello
Has anyone had issues with the 4.0 V6 knocking? My 08 X-runner I believe spun a rod bearing.
Also is the oil pan removable with engine in truck? If this was covered on another thread I apologize.

Have you drained your oil yet? If not, where is the oil on the dip stick? Near the bottom dot, in the middle, at the top dot?

What kind of driving were you doing as the noise presented itself?

The lower oil pan is easily removed. The upper oil pan takes finesse.

Oil was between full and add. It was running fine. Noise started out as a louder than normal tick around 2000 to 2500 rpm. changed oil saw no metal in it. After oil change with the parking brake set I loaded the engine and now it sounds like a bag of hammers. Local shop said he could feel it in the oil pan. I guess I am having a hard time thinking a yota motor came undone. I am the 3rd owner had it just over a year. Had 84k when i bought it just hit 100k when this happened.

Not pointing the finger at you, as you couldn't have known. I am letting you know from years of experience as well as from having help created an oil pan spacer to increase capacity to prevent the oil starvation problem associated with the XR shallow oil pan, your first mistake was having the oil in the middle.

On the XR and some PreRunners with the same shallow pan, having the oil in the middle, is a recipe for bearing failure due to starvation. ALWAYS FILL TO THE TOP DOT*****

Check the oil level while the engine is running, and you'll see why I stress that point.

Is that you problem? I am not sure. Have you drained the oil through a shop rag or coffee strainer, to look for shavings?

Does you truck have an aftermarket clutch/flywheel that could be loose?

First check, is to drain the oil and look for metal debris. Then there is the next steps to follow. The lower oil pan is easy enough to remove, if you find large flakes.

Yep my fault 100% I thought if it was between full and add it was ok. :boom:
Do not know if the clutch was ever changed in it. I assume not because the pedal seems to be at the top of travel. I really thought it was a clutch issue because you can feel the noise in the floorboard.
I just looked in the oil catch pan and didn't see anything but at that time is was a slight noise. Will drain the oil threw a rag and see what I get.
Is the oil pan why I see engines for sale that say excluding XR?
So the next thing is if I get a used engine was it ran the same way? Roll of the dice I guess.
My thoughts are if the crank is damaged might as well change the complete motor. What would you do in my situation?
Do you sell the oil pan spacer?
Thanks for your help on this! Want to buy a truck?????

IF the rod bearings are bad, best bet is to swap with a good used engine.

Correct on "excluding XR." The only difference is the upper/lower oil pans. One from a PreRunner or 4x4 can be swapped over, or an engine from one of those vehicles can be dropped straight in.

The oil pan spacer can also be purchased through my friend. @Coupe .

My '15 had a bad rod bearing at 10k miles, was quiet when engine was cold, sounded like a diesel at 2000-2500 rpm when warmed up. New short block under warranty of course in my case. Somewhat disappointing when I bought a '15 figuring a 10 year old Toyota engine design should be a proven package over the '16 3.5. Oh well, at least my transmission doesn't hunt for gears all the time.

    I still like the truck.

Here is the latest, been avoiding it because I was afraid of what I was gonna find. #5 rod spun, next step is pull it and send it to a machine shop. Hopefully the crank can be saved.
