Edit - so I got an engine with 3k on it out of a 2015 truck for a pretty good deal I think but I know it’s going to take some extra little things to make it work. Anyone ever done this swap before and have pointers?

Pretty sure a 12-15 will work as well as long as you use your same ECU and swap your exhaust manifold to the new engine.

Basically, you just swap your non-air pump parts over to the newer engine.

I was told I’d need a different header for one side which is quite pricey

cant you just use the headers off your old motor and block off the sai pump hole.

I swapped a 2012 Tacoma engine into my 2007 FJ Cruiser. I had to use the 2012 Tacoma exhaust manifolds and simply made a block-off plate for the SAIS. I removed all of the other SAIS pieces as well and used the FJ wiring harness. Besides that, just about everything transferred over.

I swapped a 2010 motor in to my 06 no problem.

    IMG_20181208_155142.jpg

2010 on the left, my 06 on the right.

2012+ have the added piping above the exhaust ports, I hadn't seen anyone that had done it, so I stuck what I knew would work.

Good luck with your predicament, can I ask at what mileage your gasket let loose? My 06 4.0 Just turned Over 108k.

Jeez. What build date was yours in 2006? I’ve read about this topic but it was a couple years ago. My build date was feb. 06

Mine went at 196k, build date of September 2005, 2006 MY.. wasn't a head gasket though, threw a rod and then that rod caused another rod to window the block as it floated around in the oil pan at 70 mph on the highway at ~3800rpm.

Just swap your old exhaust manifolds over using the newer style gaskets

So I can use the 06 style headers as long as I change the gaskets and take the valve cover from the 06 engine?
