I have a 2010 TRD off road that went to knocking after pulling out in traffic and getting on it so I wouldn't get ran over. It has 250k miles on it. I dropped the oil pan and found little slivers of bearing material. I'm assuming its a rod bearing.

Am I better off rebuilding or getting another engine?

It would be easier to find a low(er) mileage used engine.

Sorry to hear you seem to have had a major blowout. Just out of curiosity, are you the original owner andid you maintain or manage the maintenance of your truck from day one?

Sometimes it is nothing more than the luck of the draw. And, 250K miles is no small feat or anything to be ashamed of. I know hope is not a great strategy but I'm hoping to get more mileage out of my 2014.

Any words of wisdom about things that if you had the opportunity you would have done differently?

Best of luck with your engine replacement. I passed 100K miles this year and to me, my truck, top to bottom and inside out looks virtually the same as it did at 25K miles. It is not babied and certainly not garage kept but it is maintained. The 4.0L sure seems to a pretty robust engine but what happened to you could be any one of us.

I'm a pretty picky SOB but I have built two engines in my life and worked on many more but I don't do it for a living. Unless I had everything staged in front of me and time was not a factor, I would not enjoy the effort. I would want to jump at a low milage bone yard opportunity but if I sat down and analyzed risk versus reward, a rebuilt engine from a healthy reputable company who has been around and offers a warranty would have to be so expensive that it just made no sense.

That's the problem with driving higher mileage engines. Don't know how they were drivin or maintained.

It's been 8 months since you posted about needing an engine. What did you end up doing?

I'm thinking you sold the truck and let someone else make the decision. If I would have known you bought it with 225, I don't think I would had offered a different line of thinking. The one thing I would have added is if the truck looked highly well maintained so that in no way did it look like a vehicle with that kind of mileage I would have said, you losing the engine was just a bit of bad luck. I think you know that well maintained versions of these trucks are well known to last much longer.

I would have found an engine for it and enjoyed another 250K miles  Sure would like to hear what you ended up doing.
