Yeah I'm curious myself. I did everything I could to try and locate the broken piece, long magnet, a wire and a good spot light. I was even considering to bring home a micro boroscope to try and find it. I did a thorough inspection of the area to see signs of damage from the piece coming off but no dings or smeared metal anywhere. As much as I hate working under the truck I would have peace of mind to pull the oil pans and find it.

After two Galant VR4's and three motors, I wouldn't put any DSM part near my tacoma. Those half moons are notorious for leaking.

I don't like the idea of cutting away material especially when oil is on the otherside.

While you have your truck apart make sure to seal the hell out of the timing chain cover when you put it back on. There is a major issue with them leaking

I haven't been inside a 4.0, but is it not possible to elevate the cam to remove bolt?

I thought about that myself and that was my original plan. The thing that I'm worried about is the chain slipping a few teeth and causing me to remove the cover anyways.

I have rebuilt many 1GR's. I have seen only 1 member or individual possess the ability to remove the intake cam gear without having to remove the timing cover. 1. It was not I. That is a tricky dance.

You do not have to remove the oil pan. You MUST remove the two studs near the bottom and silicone the mating surfaces between timing cover to oil pan well. As well as replace that oil pan o-ring. Well every o-ring that you find when you remove the timing cover.

You should be able to find it with just removing the lower oil pan. Such a strange problem. 1st time seeing this one.

The words roll off the fingers effortlessly. Antonym to that task.

    Thank you Torspd!
I know the service manuals always say remove everything and are written as if the engine is on a stand out bench.

At 225,000 miles why not just put a brand new long block in.

Don't buy a long block from advanced auto parts. I've had 4 bad ones from them out of 5

Not in my budget. This Tacoma still has a strong engine with good compression in all 6 cylinders and good oil pressure. I just need to fix the cam gear so I can get rid of the codes and the engine sputtering when the computer tries to adjust. Still getting over 18 MPG in the city. Motor still has life in it.

I've been having issues with my 06 throwing misfire codes and occasionally actually fisfireing. Is that the "sputter" your referring to? Since it has the stage 1 mk3 s/c from URD I as well about to open her up to make sure they installed the cam gears correctly. What are you experiencing specifically with your truck to suggest a timing issue. My truck is about 15% rich on bank 1 and throws code p300, ocasionaly p306, obdll and another once for timing.
