Yeah it really isn't that bad. With the fan turned up to 3 I don't hear much ticking. I just want it to sound as good as it pulls! That's why I am thinking of an exhaust or CIA. TRD seems to be the way to go. Is that made by Borla?

Oh there will be some mods all right
Obviously this is completely opinion, but I don't think these engines sound good regardless of exhaust. I've spent hours on YouTube listening to a bunch of different exhausts and couldn't really find any I liked. Maybe in person I'd like some of them better.

Is the check engine light on? Maybe the converter material is breaking apart and starting to rattle around

2.5 inch suspension lift front with rancho 9000 quick lift struts, rear rancho shock absorbers with 2.5 inch sky jackers add a leaf springs in rear. extra 2 inch long braided front brake lines with radiator flush, transmission flush, brand new front brake rotors, calipers, and shoes all done myself. more to come
the ticking might be coming from your radiator fan clutch. that might need to be replaced. run the engine and open the hood and see if it is indeed the fan clutch ticking away as it spins. if it is, replace it along with pulleys and new tensioner arm and water pump and alternator. might just be the fan clutch, but might as well hit it all if you have to replace it. gates pulley kit and gates belt

if you think you are gonna make it sound better by getting rid of the stock exhaust you are going to have a BAAAAAD time

I guess I am weird as I like the way the engine sounds? I just wish I could hear her a bit more.

    None.
Get a URD supercharger. The whine will drown out the ticking.

The ticking is indeed coming from the injectors. I used a Mechanics Stethoscope to pin point the noises when mine had about 5k miles on it.

look up tacoma's or fj's with the AT2525xl or the AT2525 with a resonator. Best sounding muffler for these trucks imo. Other than that i agree, the engine doens't have a good tone to it.

    What this guy said ^

The 4.0 just doesn't sound good, no matter what you do to it. With an exhaust, they sound like Corollas with rusted out mufflers.

The ticking can be reduced by running thicker or better oil.
a 40 if you are towing or off roading a lot would be a good idea in summer. I started with 40 wt Mobil One for years. But decided to try the 30 wt for better mpg. didn't help and didn't hold up as long and made the ticking worse.
Mobil oil is thinner and ticks more. when I switched to royal purple it was much quieter but didn't seam to hold up any better so now I'm running 0-40 wt Amsoil, a true full synthetic and it's still quieter...

Just a muffer swap will help the sound if you find one you like...

I've heard the ticking is due to the fuel injectors. Completely normal, shouldn't have anything to worry about

Yeah had to go start mine and listen...
Standing next to the truck I just hear a little ticking for a few seconds till the oil works through and that's it ...
With the hood open you will always hear ticking...

    I have a 2010 with 78K..

The valve train uses a bucket/shin system vs the hydraulic lifters in most modern cars, you will hear a lot of ticking from the valve train.

I've always thought mine is louder than normal. I work in a shop so I see a tacoma come in occasionally. I'll usually listen to it for a second and I have yet to come across one as loud as mine. What's bad is they all have more miles than mine, which is at 61k now. I bought it with 24k on it and it hasn't gotten any louder so I don't worry about it.
