I don't want to discredit your handy work, but don't you think the years of R/D done by highly educated people at Toyota corp returned the best solution for our air intake? I have always taken the stance that it's built a certain way because that's the best solution hundreds of engineers could come up with....

Except for the Tacoma's suspension... I think the engineers had a decimal or a comma on the wrong place when they design the rear leaf pack

intake.jpgHey guys I tried this mod for MPG, it goes with the theory of Fresh, Clean and Cold air. Stock takes air from the passenger wheel well, This just took air stright from the grill. Sadly I had a loss in MPG's. Not sure if it due to fuel inhection not letting it work, but i figured it would help at least maybe 1 MPG. but I did not get that result at the altitude of colorado.

    Anybody have ideas why?

Ya I understand its engineered by toyota but it was worth a shot to try and improve a lil with the gas prices. Youd think engines are that same basics as to air and fuel. I know old muscle runs better on fresh clean and cold air so i tried it.

I see it now, there are probably a few reasons it didn't work. Corrugated pipe does not promote, smooth or laminar flow. The air flow is stead choppy so while it's pulling from the front of the truck, it's not a smooth flow or air. Secondly, that's a thin walled pipe and is probably sapping a lot of heat from the engine bay so again, while it's pulling clean, fresh air from the front of the truck, it's being warmed up before it reaches the engine. Put the stock intake back on and get your 1 MPG back. You will be hard pressed to find a cold air intake that improves MPG, let alone build one yourself. Not knocking your ability but the stock one is pretty good as is.

Originally not Expo AF! Kinda Expo AF now...lame.
Perhaps you got it to work as intended.

Doing a bit of research shows that colder, denser air allows for only 1 thing, more fuel in the chamber. Your ECM is going to add more fuel if you give it more air to produce more power. More fuel....

Remember like 4 months ago when WhipperSnapper jokingly said to add a HOT AIR INTAKE? Well...that would lower air/fuel mix and likely improve MPG.

    Science is a bitch.

And Pugga is right, the stock intake is honestly the best one. I put a Drop in, then a CAI, then went back to stock because it worked best and cost nothing.

Ya I kept checkin the air tube I put on for heat, it actually stayed pretty cold to touch. I figured the stock tube has the corrugated area too so mine would not be much of a factor. The rumor is turbulent air mixes fuel better such as the "Tornado" inserts.

Oh well it was worth a shot, and it was free so nothing lost.

Well all in all my intake was FAIL, haha. on to the electric fan conversion and the airdam for front bumper.

Air dam will be free as well other than the fabricating time. Ill get pix and kepp updated on results.

Those tornado inserts are a joke in my opinion. You're right though, for the $10 in materials that cost you to try out, nothing ventured, nothing gained. I'm curious to see how your air dam works out.

Yah the engineers Ive talked to bout the air dam say it should work great up here in colorado, and like this previous post from a guy at sea level saying he got 3 to 5 gain. But look at his, its not sealed around the bumper plus it has the roll out at the bottom similar to a splitter for nascar(which builds down force)

Wow, and now this thing should be avoid as good as a Prius in the snow! At least it will leave a cleaner path for any one following it.

Back in the 70s during the first oil embargo, this subject was covered.
An proper air dam was shown to have a big effect on mileage.
I am looking for something I can bolt on that is low enough to work.
I was hoping this forum had found something? :)
