I know there were some issues regarding the secondary air injection pumps failing. But overall its a bulletproof engine, my 08 had 90k on it when I traded it for my 11, no issues.

Head gasket went in my 04 4Runner around 165k a common problem on early T4Rs 03-05, I think they worked it out after that. You hear about it a lot on T4R.org, Always makes me scratch my head when you hear everyone praising the engine on this forum, I guess by the time it went in the Taco they upgraded the gasket.
It is not a cheap fix.

Had no other issues and took good care of it.

They updated the head gasket at some point in 06.

    Read the * part

Toyota says the million-mile truck, which has the V6 engine*, has survived this long with no extraordinary maintenance outside “timing belt replacements, oil changes, and the manufacturer’s regularly scheduled check-ups,” in a press release.

(*Correction: the dealership originally told me this truck had a 4.6 V8, but Toyota has informed me it’s actually a 4.0 V6 truck.)

Whoever wrote that doesn't have any idea what they are talking about. I've seen the tear down pics of the engine.

It was the 4.7, the 4.6 and 5.7 both use chains. The 4.7 is mated to the A750 transmission, shared with our 4.0 Tacoma's. The 4.7 was available on 07 through 09 tundras.
Edit: The 4.7 was available before 07, I'm just referring after they updated the body.

Is the bell housing also the same between the 4.7 and 4.0? As in can you bolt in the 4.7 instead of the 4.0? Pretty sure the V8 T4R motor mounts work on the Taco. The 4.7 ECU should be able to control the Taco trans since both are the A750 right?

I'm not sure, there are several bellhousing variants I think. And there are three different valve bodies used in the 2nd gen tacomas a750, which are not interchangeable from my understanding. There is a guy here that has swapped in a 4.7, he could tell you. Hang on and I'll find his thread for you.

I've seen that thread and it's nice but wouldn't pass CA inspections and I'm not interested in the old 4.7 that didn't have VVTI. It makes about the same power as the 4.0 but needs more maintenance. Also I really LOVE the A750. Such a smooth and strong trans. Where can I find that info on the valve bodies you mentioned?

The fitment by year part in the first post at the bottom. As far as I know the valve body is the only difference in the transmission from year to year. @gearcruncher knows more about these than I do.

I have both of them, but not sure if I could get a good enough pic to show it.
