I've done a lot of reading and cut open a lot of oil filters. There are guys on Bobistheoilguy pushing their filters to 20k or more, while changing the oil several times in between. I'm not advocating going that far, but I have no issues running a filter for a full reasonable OCI. I change my oil and filter both every time at ~3k, but I run a lot of hours up in that 3k... I'm averaging about 13 mph. My daily commute is less than 1 mile, I make that trip 4-5 times daily and idle a lot in between trips usually.
They say that the average person will average around 33 mph (say 30-35mph), there's some debate about this, but that's the number I keep coming back to.
Most people , in the same amount of runtime I accumulate on an OCI will have been around 7,500 miles.
I have a friend that has 186,000 on his truck, over it's lifetime it has averaged 57mph, all of his miles are highway/interstate. In the runtime it takes me to accumulate 3,000 miles he puts over 13,000 miles on his truck.
There are a lot of variables that go into oil and filter changes, ultimately you have to figure out what is best for you, and do what best suits your circumstances and usage. You are correct, oil analysis will tell you a lot... everyone uses their vehicle differently.

I'd rather just pay the $6 for a new filter... it's like saying yeah man just reuse your condom it's good man.... like yeah it will work, but why?

I get mine for around $4, I'm not trying to change your mind, I'm just saying that a filter is fine for a full OCI. Do you pull your condom off in the middle of a romp and put a new one on? No...
Cut your oil filter open at your next oil change and post pics, I'll do the same.

 We went from engines>oil>condoms.... I'm done. My whole point was that 1 OCI = 1 filter for me. 1 oil change, 1 filter. If a filter isn't capable of going a full OCI I need to change to a better filter or change my oil more often. The most damaging particles are in the 5-7 micron range, a stock oil filter is usually rated at like 30-40 micron nominal, some of the best are 20 microns at 99% efficiency. If you want a good filter, go to a bypass type setup. A stock oil filter, new or used is not going to clean the oil to an acceptable degree for extended use. That's why we change oil so often, look at ships... some of them never change the oil, they run a massive bypass oil filtration system to capture all the harmful wear contaminants and some even boil the moisture out of the oil, preventing the additives from breaking down, the only oil that is added is makeup oil as it is burned off by the engine.

My original comment wasn't even directed at you then, it was directed at the people who change their oil at 8k and filters at 4K (not picking on anyone in particular, that's just an example). The oil light is set to come on every 4500 miles, assuming you reset it when you change your oil.

Arguing about oil will go on for 400 pages, whether it's snowmobile forums, atv/sxs, truck, car, etc etc, people never see it the same way.

I ran whatever oil was on sale in my old z24 and I sold it with 350k on the odo, so do what you want, it really doesn't matter this day and age.

Sidebar, What is the easiest way of turning that light off short of having the dealer do it?

With the key off, hit the button to show the odometer reading. When the odo reading is showing, hold down the button and continue holding the button down while you turn the key on, don't start the truck. Continue holding the button until you see 6 zeros.

Your right, probably one of the cheapest parts to buy, but very labor intensive to fix. I didn't have the time to tackle that myself.

Currently at 7K on Mobil One 0W30 and stock filter. I disregard the maintenance light. I'll be closer to 8K when I change it in the fall.

Just traded in my 07 4.0 with 353,000 miles. Changed the oil every 5000 miles with Penzoil 5w-30 conventional oil. The engine still ran perfect. She would drink about a half qt between changes. Awesome engine!!
