Skid plate doesn't need removing......there's a hole in the center for the drain plug. Aftermarket skids have the same thing. Just reach inside the hole and BAM there it is.

Toyota service tech left a damn empty bottle in the engine bay (DIY catch pan) and I drove like that for a month......now I change my own oil.

So my 2013 trd sport just hit 30k miles and I've been taking stearlership since it's 1st oil change bc it was included in my purchase. Now that that's up I'm going to do my own oil change. They've been using the regular oil from day. My question is, can I now switch to Mobil 1 synthetic oil? I here lots of good reviews and see that's what most of the taco guys are using

Yea it shouldn't hurt anything. I've been using Mobil 1 since I've owned mine.

I've always used Mobil 1 synth but you should read the reviews for Pennzoil Ultra Platinum.

I've used the free oil changes at the dealership. For the first three changes they used dino oil. At 20,000 I requested a switch to synthetic. They charged me like $24 to upgrade. I have one more "free" change left that I'll opt for synthetic, then I'll do my own. No problems switching over.

Just done a oil filter change. Now about the oil life monitor resetting. There has to be a trick to it because I couldn't get it.

Did my first oil change on my tacoma last night using this thread after always having somebody else do it and I even made the switch to full synthetic (M1 5W-30):D. I have to admit I was excited about the future potential savings after realizing how easy it was to do it myself. Now I just need to rotate the tires and I'm good.

Question for you fellas. When I remove the filter drain nipple, the oil doesn't drain out. It just sits in the filter cup. It's been jammed like this the past two oil changes. And yes even after I loosen the filter it's still stuck. What do you guys think?

If your talking about the little drain on the cup, then poke a piece of wire thru it to clear the blockage.

Is there any way to precharge the new filter? My Taco is still a virgin but I want to be ahead of the game on this.
I never saw a filter install upside down like this. NO WAY a dry filter startup is of no consequence to the engine.

What probably wouldn't hurt is a short crank, stop. crank, stop. Then start up for the pressure check.
I've used that procedure for years ever since a Chev's pump lost it's prime during the oil change.

Probably will be messy but fill it up. Not all the oil comes back out when turned over. Although I doubt it will hold enough oil to be worth while. I wouldn't worry about it though. Tacomas are tough, I haven't heard of issues related to this yet.

Yeah, I was thinking that too. I can see dumping 80% of it just getting it turned over and lined up to start screwing it on.

Just did my second oil change on my 15 Prerunner. What a breeze with the Fumoto valve installed! After draining completely, I transferred the oil into the empty 5qt jug of Mobil 1. Looked like only about 4.75 drained out total (including filter). Is this about what everyone else is seeing? Don't know how much is still in the lines etc.

Thanks to all for info/pictures. I am not very mechanical and after reading all posts here will now join d-i-y oil changes. Bought Mobil 1, ordered pack of oem filters on ebay and will order fumoto valve tomorrow. After reading posts I crawled under truck to check it out, then popped hood to see filter. I had read the rubber plug on the oil filter drain might be hard to remove so I tried to pull it off and finally figured out it was missing as I couldn't see well. I stopped by dealer that used to do my oil changes to see if they had a plug laying around but the guy didn't seem to know what I was talking about ( maybe I didn't make myself clear ) so I went to parts. They didn't have plug but he gave me this rubber sleeve which is 1 inch long with 1/4 inch inside diameter, it slid on snugly and covered drain so I guess it will work. Also bought 5/16 inch id tubing to drain it. Read about dipstick and filed it to help read levels, also was concerned about zerks but searched and found out my 12 v6 does not have zerks I need to lube. Thanks to all for great info and pics, I look forward to doing my own oil changes now.
