I used to use just the 5.1 gallon jugs, but then a buddy came by and didn't like the tick so he poured a half bottle in and it quieted it down a good bit. I'd say stick to using 5.5qts. A little over the hard to read dip stick isn't going to hurt.

Wow, I never thought about that for the oil filter, I always just drain all the oil from the pan first, and then remove my oil filter, and wipe off the excess oil, this is a great idea! Thanks!

Mobil 1 has the $12 rebate again on a 5 qt jug. It’s on sale at Walmart for $25 so after rebate, a 5 qt jug is only ~$13 depending on tax. Match this up with a $4 oem oil filter and you got a cheap oil change with SYNTHETIC oil!!!

Calling all help, and input to those who have experience directly or seen this....

I noticed this this sludge a little while ago in the oil neck underneath the cap, but it wasn't nearly this bad....
I didn't think too much of it because when I checked it I knew I use the truck to commute which is an 8 minute drive time, 15-20 minutes total per day. I know that moisture gets into the plastic oil neck and if the engine doesn't get to operating temp it won't allow burn off/evaporation.

However when checking it today-- bear in mind I drove for the better part of an hour and the truck was fully warmed up, I popped the cap off after getting home and saw this (pictured below)....

Is this due to the VERY SHORT commutes, and am I able to unscrew the neck, take it off and clean the sludge out and then watch it from here on out or should I be more concerned with any water/coolant in the engine mixing with the oil?

The dipstick does NOT have any sludge on it FWIW
I've been noticing it's a bit sluggish to start up when cold FYI
Also the truck is ~500 miles away from hitting 60k

    Solid input, thank you.
I took the neck off and cleaned it already- it went quicker than expected so that was nice.
Yeah I’ve got an motor oil, diff fluids/oil change, tire rotation and spark plug change at the 60k mark

    Update on the oil gunk.
Took the plastic oil neck off:

Luckily there's absolutely no sign of gunk within the engine

Take it for a LONG drive once a week or so. Long enough to get HOT and it will get rid of the goo. Happens with short trips mainly in the winter where the motor doesn't get hot enough to get rid of that.

Tired of the incompetence of the stealerships I’m going to start to do my own maintenance, thanks to this forum I have all the info needed. Thank you guys for all the tutorials. Now going back to the oil change. My plug has a big chunk of silicone. Anybody knows what’s that about??
    Also 5w-30w or 10w-30w?
Also, what do I need to do to change to synthetic oil.D4A5F9AF-DB99-452D-9E6F-E302133C067F.jpg

5W-30. FULL synthetic, don't buy blends because you have no idea what the dino to synthetic ratio is. Doesn't really matter what brand. I use Amsoil but you won't find that in your basic Auto parts store. Royal purple is really good as well. Also buy a good quality oil filter. There is a book on the wall that you look up your model of vehicle and it will list out part numbers for the correct sized filter.

Any synthetic 5w30 will do the trick. Pick any name brand oil, Penn's, M1, Castroil or whichever and change it according to the book. I buy whatever is on sale a the WM and always use a OEM filter changed every 5k. I'd like to think my truck has a soul but I doubt it can tell the difference between oil. Also ya may want to look into getting a Fumoto valve to replace your drain plug
