I've had a fumoto valve on my truck for 12 or 13 years and no issues with it. Never accidentally flipped. There's a tough spring on it.

Nothing against Fumoto at all, I just thought the added security of no lever to worry about might be good.

Ya I can see how it sounds sketchy until you see/feel it.
I've had mine for 3 years with no issues and I off road pretty frequently. Basically no way it could ever come loose on it's own.

The Fumoto valve level can slide open if it is not properly closed to where it snaps into the notch.
    See https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/fumoto-fact-you-might-not-know.740535/
I have the EZ Valve, same concept and same style lever but has a larger ID and drains a little quicker. I use a mini hose clamp myself just in case. The clamp is flush with the bottom if the lever is in the notch, thus I can immediately notice if the lever is not properly closed.

Gen 2 Toyota trucks have got to be the easiest ever for oil change. Hey everybody can’t be a talented mechanic or even junior lube technician, lol. No shame in being honest but the downside is you’ll be at the tender mercies of whoever not mention you’ll be paying for the labor. Sometimes having a strong masculine role model or even a talented female mechanic can give youngsters the confidence they need to tackle projects that seem above their skill levels.

just changed my oil and I took an old splicing knife and laid it on top of filter and hit it with a hammer to put a little slice in the top metal.... then crawled under and drained oil and when i was done under i screwed the filter off and there was no oil left in the old filter at all, so no mess.

Yep I knock a hole in mine with a punch. Wrote a note in sharpie in the engine compartment, that and remember that the oil splashes like a mofo if I dont elevate my catch pan.

my apologies if I missed it but does anyone know dimensions on acquiring a drain plug washer

looking to put a stop to going to the dealer for the expensive felt coated one every time
And just stock up on metal washers copper or aluminum sealing from a hardware store
To have a pack of many stocked up no drive trip needed

I have a Dimple magnetic oil pan plug and use Toyota OEM washers on it so I assume the dimensions aren’t anything crazy

I think the dimple plug is m12x1.25x12

which I think means to find a sealing washer the criteria would simply be that it has to be an M12. I’ll plan on getting that and see what happens

don’t know if it matters copper vs aluminum. I’ve never had an issue with either on any vehicle torqued to spec so I imagine it doesn’t matter

Why not just buy them in bulk, with your filters, this way?

    Fumoto valve.

No more uncontrolled gushes of oil, no fishing for the plug in the pan, no worrying about washers, cross-threading etc. Fumoto even makes a dirt-cheap and very strong heavy-duty metal retaining clamp that goes above and beyond the basic lever lock w/ plastic clip.

I installed one 11K miles / 18 months ago, 3 oil changes so far, no issues with it.

dealer charges me like 5 bucks for a filter that’s confirmed genuine non counterfeit
    YZZD3
    can’t complain

    thanks I’ll look into it
Hopefully they don’t have the potential to bash open leak on a rock

I’ve gotten surprisingly better at taking off my big heavy skid plate after enough times but routing a hose would be convenient
Doesn’t have an access hole though

I’ll have to check if there’s even enough room. Truck has JD LCA pivots with their matching JD engine skid which also raises clearance making the skid higher

access hole for fumoto might mean cutting a hole
I’ll check if there’s a workaround like if my hand would fit sneaking from the side somewhere

plus current plug is magnetic to catch debris and inspect engine health whereas Fumoto is not.

That's a good price for individually purchased filters, but I infer from your previous post it doesn't include drain plug washers.

Partznet = Conicelli TOYOTA Parts Center = genuine non-counterfeit 90915-YZZD3 filters with drain plug washers.

does anyone know how/why the 5th gen 4runner has higher oil capacity than the Tacoma
    6.6qt vs 5.5qt
    despite both using 1GR-FE

4runner lower oil pan looks deeper

I imagine it could bolt up to the Tacoma, but may or may not clear the skid plate
though both of their motors, mounts, and frame it mounts to are likely similar or same, as well as skids and ground clearance
    so it might clear

Interesting. The bolt pattern sure looks like it would mount up perfectly. Stands to reason since they're both 1GR-FEs. That'd be cool to get a full extra quart of oil if it fits without clearance issues. Would it affect the pick-up or the picking-up suction negatively in any way I wonder.

Was thinking the same thing. I imagine not just because if it’s lower, it just lowers the floor. The dipstick still would protrude in the same amount to achieve full level mark with more oil and thus still be reachable by pickup tube.

timing wise would probably be best if someone had to reseal or replace their pan.

then, if they spent the $50ish on 4runner pan, if it doesn’t fit they can return it. Such as if they go to bolt up their skid and it interferes.

maybe it would clear. Because I believe JDfab LCA pivots, which raise skid height, is also available for 4runner and I haven’t seen mention of the lower oil pan as a concern there. The same kind of pivots kit available for Tacoma.

another way, that would bother parts dept
Look at both new pans side by side at counter desk to compare
    Or order new and return
    Never use, just compare

I guess you guys just go harder on your trucks :notsure: 300k+ miles and haven't had a lack of oil. Also when I resealed my lower oil pan one edge of it was quite close to a crossmember or something. Pull your skid pan and take a look.
