I have owned my truck since new for about 12 years and put about 225K Kms on it (140K miles). I have done all maintenance on the truck at the correct intervals. One thing I have never touched or thought that much about is the PCV valve. I know the part is relatively inexpensive.

I haven't seen any specific service interval recommendations for PCV replacement for the 4.0L. I have seen some generic "should be replaced at 50,000 mile" recommendations. My understanding is that is just a one way valve.

Thoughts on replacing it at some regular interval vs. just leave it alone?

It's quite easy to replace and only about $10 for an OEM one. I would do it. I did mine at 80k

replace every 100k but chances are its hard as a rock and the pieces will fall in, better to change it when you remove the head, if the truck is fine amd no oil loss i wouldnt worry bout it. I did mine when they adjusted the valves

I would replace it. Just remember it is a tapered thread and doesn't need to be fully drawn down in order to seal. Snug it down and reconnect the hose.

    Good advice Jimmy.

If you get it too tight, you’ll crack the valve cover.

Doesn't hurt, same goes for rad caps. They swell with age, doesn't hurt to change them after 10+ years. Not needed though.

Replaced the PCV today, for the 1st time. 225K Km, ON truck.... will do it more frequently going forward. I could hear the ball rattling around in the old one when I shook it, which is a good sign. Torqued new one to 20 ft. Lbs

I noticed some cracking on the hose, so replaced that too.

I noticed my hose was cracked when I replaced my PCV valve, so I replaced it too.

Be careful with that torque. The PCV Threads are tapered and too tight will crack the valve cover. It only needs to be snug.

I'm gonna replace my PCV tomorrow with an OEM valve thanks to this thread.

Is there any cleaning that should be done after you unscrew the old PCV valve inside the threads or is that a no-no?

I watched a couple videos with some pretty dirty PCV valves. None of the video's suggested cleaning before inside before installing the new one. I fear mine might be pretty dirty and I wanted to give the new valve a clean slate.

    Thanks

    20 ft/lbs per the book, for V6. 44 inch/lbs for 4 cyl.

Sorry for the diversion guys, but I'm new to Toyota. Is there an online source for OEM parts that has diagrams like the one Chuy posted so you can find your parts and part numbers and then order?

Changed mine the other day but drove it more today and wow! I'm impressed. It starts quicker and easier ....and runs smoother.

not bad for an $8 dollar part!

    Thanks everyone

Just replaced mine at 186k. It still had a rattle to it but had a slight leak when pressurized.

I know it's an old thread, but I'll just go ahead and say that there's no need to proactively replace a pcv valve at 50k miles under the guise of preventative maintenance.

The way mine is running now I'm gonna do it every 30k. It might not be required but it was such an improvement I'm not gonna wait, especial now that I'm over 200K on the truck. For $8 I improved my engine. I'd do it every year if I had too.
