I'd use a mechanic's stethoscope (around $20 and a good investment), and start by probing each serpentine belt idler pulley including the tensioner. Just touch the probe to each pulley's center bolt and listen. These are bolted directly to the engine and transmit noise when the bearing wears out.

Would it make sense if it was the pulley if it was only 5 mins and only in cold temps? Fwiw all new pulleys and belt 6 months ago.

When the new pulleys were installed, was a torque wrench used to tighten the bolts to factory specs? If not, too much torque on the bolts may damage the pulley bearings. Stethoscope will tell the story.

Yes. So they would only make noise on cold days then.

Gonna go out on a limb here. But every year around same time we hear of cold weather knocks, flutter, ticking etc. I too was plagued for years by some noise that seemed like it could only be heard in the cab when it was cold out. Never heard it under the hood or outside of vehicle. Searching here in TW I found my answer. Believe it or not it was the gasket on the air filter snorkel that is mounted in the passenger side fender. Once I double taped the snorkel the sound has not returned. Check out my audio clip. Good luck all!!

Same symptoms as mine to the tee.

Edit:Never mind...just realized I just quoted my own post!!
But it definitely was the gasket on the snorkel that was the source of the noise.

That is what I heard it could be as well, but my noise is more of a ting rattle, and after I drive it for a while and it warms up it goes away.

@Fatmonk8 you ever find out what the rattle was? My 17’ does the same thing at start up. If you put it in gear it rattles loud or if you turn the wheel but disappears after everything warms up it’s been driving me nuts

Hey I know this is an old post, but could you provide a photo of the gasket where this noise was coming from? Where is it at?

I'm getting this same exact sound and would love to fix it.

    Thanks!
