I had 31 on my 5 lug auto and it sucked balls. Mpg sucked, no up hill speed unless I could a running start. I have 31 now on my manual 5 lug n its a little better, mpg are about the same, rpms stay fairly low so freeway driving isn't bad, accelerating it lags, i rarely use 5th gear (mainly cuz my work commute is 2 miles of freeway) I'd plan to get 4.10, any gear bigger for bigger tires then you'll be redlining on the freeway

So you’re power isn’t all that bad? And if you do end up getting 4.10 update me on that please, because with all these responses I’m just going to settle for make a cold air intake and see if that can get me some power back

If your manual then you'll be ok, if your auto regear

If you are going to go be going much above 29" .. make the plans to re-gear at some point. The regearing issue really depends on your personal situation and driving style - If you are higher altitude.. it's going to suck. If you are in hilly or mountainous terrain, it's REALLY going to suck. If you like taking your time getting up to speed.. leave it alone, because that's what it'll do, take it's time (relatively speaking).

The Tacoma does pretty good with the 2.7L .. but the 5-lug setup is optimized for the smaller diameter, lighter tires. You just can't look at tires and go, 'that'll do'... because it likely won't. It's not going to do well with the 159hp it has to work with, to balance things out on it's own. Doing one mod, can also throw things out of wack elsewhere, which in turn then needs to be dealt with. Ask me how i know that.

Gearing also comes down to driving style. If you are a 'sunday drive' kind of driver, no sense of needing to hurry.. then it might be ok. If you need throttle response and relatively responsive acceleration, you aren't going to be happy. I'm a bit of a lead-foot, so things needed correction - sooner or later.

I went from 29.3" tires with the stock 3.31 MT gearing to 31.7" tires with a 4.10 re-gear recently. 29.3" was onerous enough. An LCE header (this is where you'll find the major intake/exhaust performance gain for the 2.7L in the form of a shifted torque curve) was installed as an interim measure before a re-gear .. it helped - but total benefit of the LCE header was only realized, when the motor had the correct gearing to put the power down without driveline strain, as it should.

FWIW .. i think you need to look at the total package, and decide what you want out of truck - choices may lead to unintended consequences and costs, leading to further choices needing to be made shortly down the road... know what i mean?

You are in the 5-lug section. Tread lightly.

If you're putting bigger tires on especially. I'd get a 5lug as a dd. And keep the 6 for fun

I'm not. I'm just saying it's a lot of work to regear, probably not worth it when there's trucks that can fit easily fit and move 31s no problem.

Hi - and if you are reading this thread - you will note that i've done all those not worthwhile mods myself. I'm sure the OP can count his own pennies. I personally found it worth it.

If you get a 6 lug rear end then you'll have 2 different lug patterns. But finding a rear end n swapping it would be the cheapest way to go. And the 8.4 have more options for gears n lockers

I Meant it as it might be better to find a new truck if he wants something with big tires and is worried about power.

Still gotta decide whether you are still saving for that 4x4 TRD, or going for broke? ;)

I suggest it, well if your not going to go 4x4. Before 5th gear was worthless and had it at 4th all the time. But now its perfect, well besides the speedometer off by 5-8mph
