Can anyone say for certain in this will or will not work? I am need of a housing "only" and I have found a great deal on a whole 3.91 axle assembly, even cheaper than any bare housing I could find. The rear in question comes from a 2016 sport AT 5ft bed...where as my truck is the same, except 2017 6 speed MT
So far I have not found much information on differences in housings, but I believe there are 3 different part numbers for housings from Toyota...
I think I read that the 3.91 housing uses a smaller stud and nut , being an m8x1.25 and 12mm nut, where the 4.30 mounting studs are m10x1.25 and a 14mm nut...that could have been comparing 2nd gen to 3rd gen however...maybe the elocker axles, an extra small bracket is welded along the top to hold the wire which does not interfere with the housing, but plugs into the side of the diff carrier
ALso I may have read that the axle tube diameters are slightly different(a little beefier and wider for the 4.30s)?
Anyhow, I would appreciate anybody who knows and can drop a quick answer, I will need to give the go ahead for the parts yard to order it up from their partner salvage yard! Thanks

TRD Sport AT and Sport MT have different rear axles (8.0" vs 8.75").
TRD Off Road (AT or MT) = same 8.75 axle as Sport MT (only difference being OR has the locking diff)
    (this only applies to 2016-2023)

You trying to replace a damaged rear housing while reusing your 3rd? (an OR housing should work for this, if so)

All manual transmission and e-locker equipped trucks have the larger (8.75) axle and the AT trucks without an e-locker have the smaller 8" axle. Gear ratio isn't relevant to which model axle you have. Parts between these axles don't interchange.

Yes diff seems ok , axles are fine , as Ive checked for runout on each, and backlash on the diff. I was lucky I noticed the issue and took the truck off the road before any serious damage(i hope) could occure.
I've done tons of digging on compatibility between gears and housings within the gen 3s. Hard to find the right info it seems, but after checking the Toyota OEM parts outlet here(toyotapartsdirect.ca) it makes sense now as the two models are not listed together….however there are some obscure ones in the lists (91 compatible varients, includes each the years of the varients) like an SR5 extended cab RWD A/T…I mean I guess its a work horse truck an needs that beefier axle!
Ok, well….my search goes on it seems…if you get any leads on a housing let me know
I want to post up some pictures soon of the progress Ive made with the truck….unknowingly to myself, as I have owned the truck only for 1 year(maybe 2 months driving it ) it also suffered the seized lower control arm / alignment cam adjuster bolts. So an entire front end overhaul was done including the gusseted tabs from total chaos
