Currently on 285/75/17's and have 5.29's the truck mpg's increased by almost 48 miles a tank however the truck constantly feels like it wants to be driven aggressively.

i am considering going down to 285/70/17's due to a 4 inch lift.

i want some torque still and mpg gains. however stuck on going down to 4.88's or 4.30's

So you're gonna spend $3-4k to re-gear because...the truck feels too fast? I'm not quite grasping the issue you're grappling with and has you ready to spend a ton of money to fix.

If you go 4.3 at least you can just get diffs off a junkyard manual transmission tacoma and save a few bucks.

the company that i swapped the regeared diffs from. they will swap the gears out at a small price for me. it does not feel on the smoother acceleration side anymore is what i am saying. i have to be lighter on the gas pedal. as in i have to somewhat feather it more in a way

Hmm I can't relate to that. I've been running 5.29s for more than 3 years without any issues. Good luck sorting it out.

If it were me, I'd UP the tire size if it feels "too fast"... Maybe 35x10.50R17 (I know Kenda makes tires this size), and leave the axles alone.

what's the 'small price' that the shop is going to charge you for a re-gear? I bet that'd buy a lot of fuel.

that just doesn't make any sense. even just changing out the assembled diffs is 7 or 8 hours in a competent gear shop. if it's actually that cheap I guess do whatever you want lol.

At that price try both lol
4.8 and if it’s still too much truck for you, have them do it again with 4.3
