I appreciate the offer...I’m in Houston, but that would be a good idea to find a local who has similar load out and gearing.

Thanks everyone for the input. I’m looking to gear next summer and am just trying to get my feet wet beforehand. And yes I do plan on getting an ARB locker at least in the rear. I’ll consider doing the front as well...

I wish I could test drive a truck with the setup you have except AT. I have a 4cyl AT and I've been worried that 5.29 and 33's will be too much for highway stuff.

What was your first ratio that didn't like?

mine is auto.... 4.56. My truck is as heavy as they come fully built with 1/4 skids sliders bumper bed rack rtt etc. If you just have 33's maybe a front bumper and sliders you could probably get away with 4.88

mines not bad on hwy i mean it stays around 3000-3300 rpm on hwy but ive never had a problem with the higher rpms. I do maintenance often though.

I am super light right now. No plate bumpers, and if I do any bumpers in the future, they'll likely be a hybrid tube style. I have skids and sliders in the works though, but with me, the missus, the dogs and our stuff, things start to add up.

So do you have 4.56, or 5.29? I'm confused. How is your gas mileage?

That was EXACTLY me when I was looking. If you're already putting in the ARB in the rear just get a second one for up front. It's literally just the cost of the extra diff. I really like having the front locker for extra "just in case".
Two weekends ago I was at an offroad park with a VERY sketchy off-camber climb that was sending people into a large rock on the passenger side. We were literally having to push on roof racks to keep guys from ripping apart the paint on their doors. The truck, with the front locker, keeps the wheels from spinning in a low traction scenario. This kept me from sliding like the others. (just uploaded so HD is still processing)

I have 5.29's i started with 4.56 which was a mistake lol. Gas mileage sucks on my truck cause its so heavy lol. like 11mpg but thats not due to gearing. Also trucks not my DD. Ive got a corolla lol that gets 30 mpg.

I’m running 285/75/17s now also it never feels under geared as well but when Chris and I did the swap I had 255/80/17 it was pretty damn snappy even fully armored.

ARB has air seal issues. I deal with them constantly. A better bet would be Eaton eLocker(s)

Saw your blurb under your forum name and missed the word "Corolla" lol. Thought your Tacoma was a manual.

So yeah, if you're on a 4 cylinder with a 3.73 final gearing and tons of extra weight/wind resistance/large tires....then you'll need the extra RPMs to keep pace for sure. The V6 is probably making 50% more torque in that cruising RPM range. It takes quite a bit of gearing to make that up.
PS: Killer build. What rear bumper is that? The side protection all the way up to the wheel well is appealing.

Ahhh that's right. I think one of the guys from ECGS mentioned that. It's been years since I did my regear. I was actually looking for something between 4.10 and 4.56 when i was shopping. At that time, the 4.30 ratio wasn't available and if it was...I probably would have done it. Ultimately, it's a good thing it wasn't available because I really like the 4.56 setup. :D

DCSB 6-speed manual with armour and 33s among other mods. I went with 4.56 gears and am glad I didn’t go 4.30s. I’m slightly over geared but the truck is much more drivable and crawls like a tractor in 4Lo. I’ve always said that if I was set up the same and diving an auto, I’d not hesitate to go 4.88s. I drive between 65-70mph on the highway and don’t care since I’m heavy and “slightly modified” ;). IMO you’d be happier with 4.88s. Also if you’ve ever considered lockers, do them at the same time. Buy once, cry once!

Honestly, the 2.7l is so gutless I'm in the market for shorter gearing to give it some more substantial umph.

Just bought a 2WD 19' DCSB 2.7. it's a little sluggish, not completely disappointed but wouldn't mind a little more pep. I am running 265/70/17 (31.6"). I may go slightly larger but no bigger than a 32. I mostly drive city with an occasional hwy bought. Looking for more power without screaming the engine at 75mph. What gear ratio would y'all recommend and what should it cost to regear a 2wd. Or would an engine mod like header or cold air intake be better. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you for the info.

The 2.7L hasn't changed much since it was introduced to the Tacoma, so it's not like the 3.5L toss up between 488 and 529 gears. For 32" tires and what you're describing for driving, I wouldn't go over 488 gear.
