Well I dont want to completely ditch the wheels that came on the truck just yet, but it definitely needs bigger tires. Its lifted 3" and has 265/70-17s now but they just look too small. The wheels are Ultra Drifter 17x8 with 4 7/8"BS and +10offset. I know most guys are saying 4.5" and you'll be safe with no cab mount rub, just a little trimming. But would I be safe for a while with 4 7/8" BS? Does that 3/8" make a difference?

The tires I found are 285/70-17s. Dick Cepek Crushers. I was planning on putting them on tomorrow, but I want to make sure it will fit without rubbing on the strut tower and cab mount.

That's definately too little backspacing. The 4.5" you have heard is for second gen tacomas to run 285's.

for first gens, the stock wheels are 4.5" BS. You'll want something at or less than 4" BS to run those.

Ah okay. It's going to be close. There are a few guys running 285's on 5" BS wheels (rockstars), but the wheels are also 9" wide so they pull the tire slightly further away from the UCA in comparison to an 8" wide rim with the same backspacing.

Wheels turned out to be 4.5". Tires fit great, minimal rubbing at full crank.
