Those who have installed 4.88 gears, did you notice a big difference? I’ve recently had 4.88’s installed and I’m not noticing much aside from I don’t have to push the gas pedal as much to get it to downshift and the city gas mileage has increased a little. Still seems sluggish. Still gets shit highway gas mileage. For what it cost, almost doesn’t seem worth it. I’m really just curious as to what you guys noticed. Thanks!

I noticed a huge difference. Was your truck already re-geared? Did you buy it used?

Definitely worth going to 5.29's. The reason is the double overdrive on the Tacoma's, and lack of low end torque. Have you done a tune alongside the gears?

I felt the same way, in a 2wd sport on 285x75x17. I've heard tune is the way to get the most out of it.

I'm not sure how anyone that's done this switch wouldn't notice a difference UNLESS maybe you just bought the truck and hadn't driven it for any length of time with the stock gear ratio.

It helps for sure but if you're expecting the truck to feel like an 5.3 v8 LS.. it doesn't.

4.88 makes 1st and 2nd gear noticeably shorter IMO. getting a tune will make it even more noticable.
I would recommend getting a tune. i think a tune + 4.88 gearing is perfect.
