I've been reading and searching for a while can't find a definitive answer. Me and my buddy want to regear my 03 Tacoma 4x4 to 4.88 gears. He is the tech in the situation and is wandering if we are going to need to grind away on the inside of the diff at all or if they are direct replacement in front and back diffs? Im trying to look for a write up on 1 gen gear swaps but couldn't find one. Any help would be much appreciated!!

Direct swap. No modification needed. There's a write up on here somewhere for the rear and another on expedition portal for the front. It's fairly strait forward

Hey does anyone have 4:88s with 285/r70/16 tires and auto with v6?? Just wondering if it will be way to low for freeway speeds. I'm about to get some installed.
    Anyone have any thoughts?

I'm not sure the difference between 1st and 2nd gen but I have a 2nd gen, 35s, V6 and 4.56s. At 60 I'm at 2k rpms and climbs fast from there. I drive a lot of highway and would not want 4.88. Please excuse me if 1st gen is completely different.

Did you mean 285/75/16? If that's the size you're looking at (33's), they 4.88 are a pretty good set up with the V6 and Auto Tranny. That should put your rpm about 260 rpm higher than stock (asumming you have 4.10 gears to Start). You'd be around 2650rpm at 75 mph. If you're starting with 4.30's then it would be about a 150 rpm increase over stock. That should keep your tranny from wanting to down shift so much on the freeway. Especially with the gear it looks like you have added to your truck. Just my $.02

Thats great info Boostedka. Ya 4:10 they are and figured that 4:88s would be a good fit as i tend to pull a small cargo trailer up some long hills from time to time fully loaded and also wanted to be nice and low for off road. Hope its just a tad bit lower than stock.

Also looking for some more quick advice on weather getting a crawl box would be the better option instead of spending the money on the lower gears? just another idea i thought id ask. Thanks.
