The DeMello Tacoma is in dire need of some lower gears. 4:88's on their way from JT parts & Accessories.

Who plans to re-gear their 2016?

I'm planning on it but I don't know much about regearing. According to the tire size calculator I should go with 4.88 as well for my tire size. Can you help a rookie out with info on product/cost for doing a regear?

I have a question, I'm not mechanic or engineer. So if these gear ratio so much better overall, even 4.3 would be great. Why Toyota doesn't do that from the factory? Better mpg(edit: better with bigger tires), better towing etc.
I mean I would throw away $1400 to regear to 4.88 in a heartbeat. But how is that would affect overall performance in a long run.
I want to keep this truck for my kids.

If my understanding is correct, the higher the gearing number (i.e. 4.88 > 3.90) the more turns it takes the drive line to turn your wheel and thus more rpm's of the motor are needed to turn the drive line.

How would having a higher gearing effect mpg, both city and highway, for the positive? What's the happy medium?

Sounds to me like you'd be running at a higher engine rpm while you drive using a higher gearing ratio versus a lower gearing ratio across the "board". Based on this, if you're doing highway driving, you might want to let the 3.90 in there, but if you're mostly urban crawling, a higher ratio would possibly get you more out of your gas tank due to easier acceleration, but be hurting you on the highway.

I think you right. You'll geta better mpg when lifted with 33"+ tires and it's easier on trans and engine, but not when stock.

With bigger tires the engine is going to be under more load, meaning at the same mph the engine would be at a lower rpm and out of its effective range. Which would make it struggle more to do the same thing. Think of it as a cheater bar in a wrench. Without it you may not be able to break a bolt loose. But with a cheater it comes off with ease. So if you lower the gear ratio it dramatically improves the load on the engine making it more efficient

@JDEMELLO - what size tires do you have?

Planning on switching to 285/75/16 tires which are 32.8" OD ( 2.2" over stock) so 4.56 or even a 4.3 would be more appropriate for this size.

I plan to in the spring. Hopefully they'll come out with some 4.56's.

I wonder if they'll make a 4.11 kit or whatever the next gear is above the 3.90 for stock tires on the automatic..

Also does anyone know if the speedometer can be re-calibrated to the correct speed?

    http://www.justdifferentials.com/GPTACO2016-4-88-8-75-p/gptaco2016-4.88-8.75.htm

This video is very interesting and he says the speed sensors are in the tires so there is no re-calibration required for re-gearing.

Will this eliminate the diff howl?

do you actually change out the gears or does it come as a complete 3rd member?

asked that in a different thread. Many are saying the diff howl is due to the rack and pinion and drive shaft so no it will not.

    I'm curious if they'll have 4:11 or 4:56.
4:88 is pretty low from factory.
    unless you're running 34s or 35s.
just from the math at 33s should be closer to a 4:11

So you mean as part of the TPMS?

Meaning if the TPMS sensors are disabled, left off, fail, etc, you have no speedo?

@Aussiek2000 , can you comment on this? Speed sensors 'in the tires' makes no sense to me. Are they there? Or are they doubling down on the ABS sensors?

Even if it is ABS, is it truely 'self correcting' in terms of ODO/Speedo? If the algorithim knows what gear you are in and does all that translation correctly, it still would not know if the final gear ratio was changed. Unless there is a way to input that into the ECU.

    What say ye?

holy shit, dude? You really need to run 4:88 gears? Do you realize that is a drive ration of 1:22 from the output to the intput? That is crazy low, like dedicated rock crawler low...

They are making 1:4.88 gears, not 4:88

    holy shit that's low

Wow this thread blew up fast.. General consensus is:
    33's and auto:
    4.10's or 4.56
    35's: 4.56 or 4.88

    Manual:
    33's 4.10
    35's 4.56
