+1 in 6th on the M/T my wife was @ 3000 rpms with a full load coming home from Vacay down 81 ... that's when I noticed the drivers side seat vibration... "hhhhooowww ffffaaassst arrrre yooooouuu ggggggoin hhhhun? 95... slow it down a hair I'm vibrating." We did 75-85mph the whole way down 81 and got like 16.3mpg with a full bed load 2 people and a full size dog.

I don't know if you need to go that low. I'm running 35's. 4:56 might be better for you?

Short answer? Toyota is retarded and basis all their ratios off of an empty truck on flat ground. Toyota use to give 4:10 ratios and even 4:30's but on paper with an empty truck you technically can get better mileage with 3:90's. But sometimes they surprise us. I think Tundra's are 4:30 witch is weird because they have way more torq. I think that was done to give that grunt feel that big truck market wants! Tacoma doesn't compete with anyone really so they can do what they want with that.

We have a mobil gear guy that visits all the local shops. Gears are something that shouldn't be trusted to just anyone.

35's I'm already running 35's and 4:88's on my other anemic toyota engine the 4runner 4.0. It's a pretty good set up. It gets up and moves off the line now!

You can calibrate the speedo but I still have a bad taste in my mouth from a dakota digital unit I bought back in the early 2000's for my 99 tacoma. I spent tons of time trying to get it right and it was still off. Now I just live knowing I'm 5mph off.

Nope just the ring and pinion. You need a professional to replace them and set them up.

With this gutless new 3.5, it needs all it can get! I drove a 2014 yesterday on 33's and forgot how much power those have. I still love the interior of the 2016 and the over all truck, just wish the engine didn't feel like a 4cylinder.

Yes it will send it off usually it's 5mph right now I believe it's about 7-10 with the bigger tires.

Yeah that would be a little low for that size tire.

It would for factory sized tires.

Actually, sometimes the factory gears are weaker. It's usually not the case but the FJC 2007-2009 had this problem as well as some of the early 2005 Tacoma's. The rumor was they were over treated and too hard. They were blowing up left and right. You were better off going with aftermarket. that said, it was common knowledge on the older toyotas that the factory gears were super strong. I believe they even offered a factory 4:56 gear ratio. But most of those guys needed 4:88's or 5:29's to run 35's and bigger.

I know bigger tires directly affects speedo and odo, but does changing the rear gears and keeping everything else stock change the speedo/odo?

4.88 vs 3.9 is a 25 percent increase. I wouldn't want to rack up 25 percent more miles than I was actually driving.

So are you saying that 3.9o that comes with 3.5 Auto is not even enough to push 265/75/16?

How does that work? (Genuinely asking...because that does not make sense to me). Why is toyota frantically replacing howling diffs with new diffs...if the problem is caused by something else?

That's only a smidge bigger than stock. Most of us who are talking about regearing have 33"+mud terrain type tires.

4.88's in the auto is still geared higher than the manual with 4.30's. At 70 with 4.88s the auto is only turning 2188rpms with stock tires. The manual is at 2350 stock at 70.

Really? Is that possible? If so the gearing in the auto tranny totally blows.

Yes. 5th and 6th in the manual transmission are .85/.71 vs .69/.58 in the auto. So yes, even with 4.88s in the auto the gearing will still be higher than the manual comes stock. This is why nitro and JT are recommending 4.88s for the auto no matter what.

With the 4.30 the gearing is decent for 265s. I run at the magic 2500 rpm's at 75 which i find will pull most grades at 75. I downshift to 5th occasionally but normally leave it in 6th and cruise. I find that at cruising speeds 2500 rpm's is where I have enough power to even accelerate up grades. Below 2500 I will loose speed even with the pedal to the floor.

I disagree with demello, the 3.5 feels nothing like a 4cyl. I've had 3 4cylinder Toyotas previously, all running 32s or 33s, and this 3.5l with the 4.30 gearing would blow the doors off everyone of them.

I do wishe the MT had a lower first gear in the tranny, but that is another discussion.

See my post above. Plenty of highway cruising power. Glad the Mt came with 4.30.

Enlighten a gearing newb....how do you calculate rpm's for a given gear ratio/drive ratio/tire size. I like math and would love to see this formula?

There are plenty of calculators online that you enter the tire size/transmission ratio/diff ratio/speed and it calculates the rpm. I have not tried to calculate it myself but the calculator I used was dead on.

Thanks. This will help others with the decision on which gears may work. With 265s I do not see a need for me to have anything lower than 4.30 unless I was only using this truck for technical trails then I may look at 4.56 gearing. Toyota actually did a decent job with the Mt gearing. I feel for you guys with the autos. I test drove autos and knew it was not the set up for me.
