Did you do the gears yourself or did you have someone do it for you?

I bought the pre-assembled diffs from East Coast Gear Supply. I don't have the tools or the know how to do them myself. Could probably figure it out but I still don't think I would trust myself to do it. haha

Parts were like $2500 (had 4.88's front and rear with an ARB up front plus the midsize ARB compressor) and i just put the assembled diffs in myself. Pretty easy really.

Just wondering why would you put in new gears and then go on long distance trip?? The guy that is install mines said not to go on any long distance for the first 500 miles. Maybe do light wheeling.

Sorry man I will  for you anyway :D.

Damn man that sucks!! And yeah... you aren't supposed to drive for more than about 30 minutes at a time on new gears til you have at least 1000 miles on them. New gears generate lots of extra friction because they are fit tight to begin with. As you break them in they slowly wear down a little and aren't such a tight fit so they don't produce as much friction. Anyway when new all that friction will produce too much heat for your gear oil and will cook it which will likely damage your gears...

Meh..after you do your first initial break in period you can drive long distances. But no driving hard or towing for the first 500 miles.

Sucks about your drain plug. My front drain plug fell off while on a trail, what a pita that was. I was hung up on the front diff and was rocking back and forth..all that rocking loosened the plug and it fell out haha

well i put right at 400 on them before this happened. planned on leaving today for the trip but now looks like ill be flying instead.

Me alone it took 1 1/2 to break down and then re-install the rear. Seeing that i was an hr from the house this time i had it towed to nearest toyota dealer and just had them re-install my stock chunk that was luckily in the back of my truck.

THEY TOOK 5 HRS TO INSTALL!!! i was like are you fn kidding me i did this in a shed with a floor jack and it takes yall 5 with all yalls fancy tools?? WTF?! so im 700 into this ordeal already and havent even started to repair the new ones

Don't you have to periodically stop and let the gears cool down.

After the first 20 minutes let it cool for a few hours as recommended. Then easy driving and no towing for the next 500 miles. Drain/refill fluid and be done with it. No need to continue the twenty minute cycle during the 500 mile break in period.
