I upped the tire size to 265/75/16 but otherwise stock. Has anybody regeared so 5th and 6th gear in the auto trans would actually be usefull?

If so,your thoughts would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Yep. 265/70/17 and 265/75/16 (two wheel sets) with 4.88’s

    Bumper, winch, sliders, lifted

Holds 5th and 6th way better. 65mph is 2000rpms in 6th. It just drives better without weird up and down shifting. I do recommend OVtune though if you haven’t done that first

You guys are really regearing for 32’s? Even on a 1st gen, stock gearing was just fine. Maybe if you’re looking at going bigger in the future but with 32’s, I’d not even bother.

With a manual, I agree. But with the auto, it is pretty much a necessity (with my 2.7 even more so).

It’s the transmission on the 3rd gen combined with the fact it has double overdrive. At 65mph with 4.88’s I’m at 2000rpms in 6th.

You can’t compare to the other gens. Not even close to the same

    And my mpgs are better

Yah the manual puts out a better rpm ratio with 4.3’s than the auto does with 4.88’s

@SpeySquatch Any reason you went with 4.88 instead of 5.29? thought 5.29 were overkill?

Went with the 4.88’s because of my setup and the fact I will never run taller than 32” tires. Plus I’m getting the 4.88 tune from OVtune

4.88’s sound like a lot, but they aren’t. They only increase about 3-400rpms per gear. If I had more weight I would definitely do the 5.29’s

I have about the same weight as you but running slightly bigger tires (285/70) and tow a boat about a dozen times a year. So i might be on the edge between 4.88 and 5.29.
Been reading that mega threads too just to get as much info lol

Yea OVtune is amazing. One of the best things to do in terms of drivability. @Flash1034 I also recommend that before gears.

285’s are ALOT bigger in terms of friction and weight

If you feel on edge don’t forget the 4.88 tune should play nicely with the 5.29’s

With 2.7, I’d agree with you. But I wouldn’t mess with it for 32’s in a V6, even in an auto. What I would love is lower transfer case gearing.

I wish you could drive my truck with the 4.88’s...would be hard not to smile. Cruising at 70 is a dream

Yup. Wouldn't we all. Unfortunately, the cost is about the same....
