I have a TRD Pro with stock suspension and tire size (265/75/r16 pretty much stock.) I have about 300 lbs of armor and trying to decide between the 4.88 and 5.29 gears. I am running OV Tune and I know they have a tune for the 4.88 gears. I shot a questions to Matt, but I know he is a few days backlogged on e-mails and because of the group buy I need to figure this out quickly. Anybody have any advice on 4.88 vs 5.29 with the OVTune? I know this is pretty specific, but thought I would ask. Thanks for any knowledge you can spit my way. Take care everybody!

Any specific reason why? Just curious...not looking to argue.

from what I have read and phone conversations with nitro. 5.29s all day. the 4.88s were kind of like the gateway drug cause at the time 5.29s were a tough sell.

cause of the 5th and 6th overdrive gears that come with the auto that are hardly ever used.

Just call Nitro directly and ask your question - they might even be able to help with the combined OVTune recommendation. I called and they directed me to 4.88 gears and so far I like them a lot. Granted I don't have OVTune, but I have 285/75/16 and quite a bit of weight. I feared that if I would have gotten 5.29 my truck would have been over-geared, and now 300 miles into the break-in period I'm glad I did 4.88. Keep an open mind to 4.88 if you know for sure you're not going 35's regardless if you have OVTune.

Nitro said if I don't plan on going bigger tires in the future 4.88 would be fine, but there is nothing wrong with going 5.29 and running stock tires either. So me thinks 5.29. Thanks for the advice guys.

See, I tend to go on the highway at 80mph very often. Will 5.29 be too much?

With your tires at 31” (265/75/16) and you don’t plan on getting bigger tires, stick with the 4.88. If you plan on getting 33” or bigger, plan ahead and get the 5.29. Also, why wouldn’t you want to use al the gears that your taco is capable of?!

The problem is finding out I need a 7th gear. I dont wanna be going 80mph on the highway at 3000rpms and then realizing I cant kick it up to 85mph for a bit.

Wait so 5.29's would be 2600rpms at 80mph in 6th? Not bad...

my opinion this is 100% not true....

Do you do a lot of highway driving? If so, you might want to think that through. 5.29's surely give more room for going with larger tire sizes. 4.88's are perfect for people with stock tire sizes. Other threads with charts showing RPM @ a given speed. The tune is somewhat irrelevant.

I had the same dilemma - ultimately decided 5.29's were too short for me, unless I went to 285's.

I can say someone with 4.88's there are times I wished I went with 5.29's. Now that I'm tuned 4.88's are more enjoyable. I know I'm not going any bigger than 32" tires nor add anymore weight. If you have that twinkle in your eye that 34 or 35's look better than 32 or 33"s on these trucks....then go 5.29's.

Wait, so you went 4.88's on 32in tires and sometimes wish you went 5.29? If you could go back would you have gotten them?

Yep! I was more worried about MPG vs drivability and I knew if I had 5.29's 35's were in my future. Driving in the mountains and strong head wind the 4.88's still scream. Although when I was getting 23 MPG across the flat midwest I did squeak out a smile! :santa2:
