Didn't even notice you said low:laugh:.

Well it looks like I have 3.73s(3.727 to be exact). A little better than 3.58 :). Thanks for the info.

I've got a 2004 SR5 Tacoma 4X4 and it has 3.91's as well. I will also add that they are too tall IMHO. When the day comes to rebuild the rear end I'll go lower. I could see at least 4.11's if not 4.56's working far better even with stock tires.

Peak torque on the 3RZ (at least my 2004) is at 4000 rpm. That's the reason so many people bitch about the lack of power. Ya gotta rev them to get to it. Peak horsepower is at 4800rpm.

I had the same gears in my truck (3.73s) and regeared to 4.56. While running 265/75s it has soooo much more power and the gas mileage did not suffer to bad. I got about 20 mpg mixed driving or 21 straight highway @75 mph. When I put the 33s on, the gas mileage dropped to 18-20 and i lost a little power. If doing it again, I would do 4.88 for 33s, and even higher for 35s.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
4.88's would kill gas mileage on the road, but you would have some more giddyup and go power with torque. With a 5 speed it may be doable, I had 4.88 gears in my Jeep with a 4 speed and it made it only able to do 55 on the highway comfortably without overrevving the engine.

Thanks, 4.56s sound right for what I want to do:). I'm considering 255/85s but it's still just a thought.

My truck is almost the same way with 265/75s on steelies. The only time I use 5th is when i'm doing 65+ on the interstate. On slight grades i'm down to 4th and on steep grades i'm in 3rd just trying to stay the speed limit.

Not sure if everyone knows but the 2.7L auto prerunners came with 4.56 gears. I have this in my double cab and I'm running 255/75/17 tires (32.2"). I sometimes wish I had 4.88 gears but I'm quite pleased with running 4.56 gears.

Yeah my stock 2.7 & 4.30s pretty often feel like the could be lower with P265/70r16 (31s) all season tires.

If you wanna be able to go back to running stock tires in the future 4.56s probably makes sense; if you're thinking of going the other way like 33s in swampers or similar then I'd definitely say go for 4.88s or if you know you will never want to run stock'ish tires.

Running higher tire pressure can help quite a bit if you're not doing it already like around 35psi, but should make them louder and wear out faster. Maybe just pump them up just for the road trips... It won't help with rpm but will reduce the load the engine experiences at that rpm; worth trying to help until you re-gear.

Also the roof rack is worsening the issue significantly; sorry to say that but it's true. Basically at any speed over 45mph the rack full of gear will have increasing drag with increasing speed that should be perceivable. The aero dynamic closed carriers can reduce fuel economy by around 20%; open cargo (non-aero dynamic) will be worse.

Less aggressive tire would also help, but I assume you're running them cause you need um. If you go through crazy muddy madness only some of the time, chains are one way to get traction on a less aggressive tire, but putting them on kinda sucks but they are amazing in mud.

Reducing load the engine experiences will allow it to be in higher gears more of the time.

I guess I'll add to the confusion and state that my 95 2.7 manual has stock 3:58 gears. I bought some 4:30s to help with my future 32s for a good price from another member. 3:58s are way too steep for the 31s I have on now.

Yeah I think they may have been intended for 225/75r15s (29s), and more concerned with fuel economy.

4.30s with a 5spd-manual sounds adquate for 32s unless they are really aggressive & heavy. If your were ordering I'd say 4.56s but 4.30s are darn close...
