I've read through the mega threads on both topics individually - most guys seem to recommend both together, and are putting lifts/tires and carrying extra weight, or towing. I have a stock 2017 Stock TRD Pro AT with stock tire size @ 265/70r16.

I'm mostly concerned with commuting performance, drivability, MPG and will only be occasionally towing, skiing at elevation and camping with rooftop tent and associated gear.

For budget sake I would like to do one or the other for now, I'm leaning towards OVTune for cost.

Anyone have thoughts, experiences, info, MPG, etc if you had to pick one vs. the other (stock vehicle, mostly commuting, occasional recreation at elevation) - Thanks for the input.

Tune and re-gearing are a completely different ball park than ETC mode, cute thought though.

I'm doing both. Right now I have OVTune and it helps a lot, still not perfect but definitely adds the ummmf the truck needs but ultimately re-gearing will give it the life the truck deserves.

Re-gearing is in the very near future for me as I am also about to go up to 285/70/17 tires.

I would not regear to 4.88 if you are staying with stock 30” tires size. Too much RPMs on the freeway will destroy your MPGs. At very most 4.56 on stock tires.

4.88 isnt going to help your mpg or commute performance at all. Its going to shorten your gear range without bigger tires to offset the ratios. Youll be at a much higher rpm cruising at freeway speeds.

    OVT for sure.

I cannot comment on MPG change with 4.88 YET. Only because I just had it done Friday and I am trying all the modes of RWD Low only, both lockers etc in gravel and mud and wet etc........hahahaha that kind of driving you just don't look at MPG, but it's around 16 MPG.

Why not get ovtune and then decide? Its a much less expensive and less invasive decision. Granted, I am a 6mt but it helped a lot.

From what I’m seeing running 265/75/16 tires and going to 4.88s is an improvement of about 1.5-2.0 mpg with just gearing. I might do OVTune in the near future, but am really happy with what just gearing provides.

I have 4.88's and the Tune. Did the 4.88's first for towing - made things better. The Tune fixed all the wanky shifting which still existed after TSB's were applied. If I had it to do over I would have added the Tune first and then evaluate. BTW I run stock tire size and it works perfectly - highway rpm is perfect. I use S mode for mountain driving and towing - no issues with the setup.

Just drove about 11 miles to Lowe's in 4Hi in rainy wet - 17.5 MPG. Not terrible!

I have OVtune with a MT (4.3 gearing). Seems perfect to me now.

I think both gearing and tune is necessary for an automatic.

I was the same before. I wish you could drive my truck. I have to say it's perfection, it's smooth. It's 1-2-3-4 like butter with real grunt in 5-6. Designed like this. Matches the powerband like a glove. Well at least with the ADM that delayed clunk is all gone. :bananadance::kona::poking:

In your scenario I would get the tune first and then gear to 5.29. 5.29 is ideal.

    Accumulator delete mod = ADM?

I have a ADM kit, but I haven’t installed it yet.

OVtune with 4.88 sounds like the ideal setup to me.

I already bought new rims. Then I want a new shocks. Then I want new tires... when does it end ?

Gearing sounds great, but I need to stop spending money like rockstar over here
