4 Banger - New PCV Valve Rattle Normal?

Got a new Pcv valve for my 4cyl since it’s never been changed in 195k miles. (Should have changed it when I did valve cover)

The new valve rattles is that normal?

 

You mean it rattles when you shake it?
If so, yes. That is normal.

 

Yes exactly! Sounds like loose or rattle parts when I hold it and shake it

 

Completely normal! Theres a check valve inside of it

 

Normal, if it doesn't rattle when you shake it that's when you know it's bad

Okay was going to replace my pcv today but I read in another thread that there’s an also a grommet that needs to be replaced? I don’t have one of those.

Can anyone chime in? Don’t want to replace anything till I know I have the correct parts

 

The grommet gets brittle after age and all the heat cycles, easily falls apart when you go to remove it. On my 3.4l I had bits of it fall into the valve cover that I had to fish out with pliers, but yeah you'll want a new one to put in there.

 

Ah I see. Back to Toyota I go!

 

Nvm I just checked..it has one built in. Hope I can get the old one out carefully

Update: just replaced PCV Valve. Did not need it (at least visibly and audibly). The old valve and gasket/o ring looked great and still had a healthy rattle. Replaced anyway and now I have a spare. Hose was a little cracked on the ends but still fit tight.

Pretty good for 16 years old and 195k. I think using only full synthetic 0w-20 has been good to this ol girl.

 

If the hose is cracked you should replace that as well when you get a chance. OEM part is only about $10. Is the gasket/grommet a press fit into the valve cover? If it is, I'd replace that too to avoid problems removing it and breaking into pieces as mentioned in the thread earlier.

 

Uhh I hope there wasn’t a seal inside of the valve cover…. All I noticed was like an o ring type seal above the valve threads, I figured that’s what seals everything up once the valve is screwed in

 

Disregard: I thought from the comments mentioning a grommet, that it (PCV) might be pressed-in through one in the valve cover. I think my son's 2005 4-cyl is that way but it has been a long time since I have seen it in his truck. I just replaced mine: the PCV is threaded into the valve cover on my 4.0L
