That’s the key flat ground, here in NC it’s hilly so it struggles at times. When I’m back in NY visiting family moved a few years ago where it’s mostly flat the truck is definitely more happy at freeway speeds. Seeing you tow so much with the 4 banger gives me confidence. I will be towing a 8x10 trailer with a load about 3000lbs in the next few weeks. I have a tune and LCE header which helps a lot. I also added a long trans cooler as well. If you ever make it out towards this area for some off roading give me a shout. Also if you don’t mind what brand sliders do you have the seem to tuck up nice. I’m looking for sliders like that no need for a step.

A few, mainly added skids. I like leaving the suspension alone. I drive forest service dirt roafs in the desert west extremely extremely too fast. Toyota nailed this suspension going 65 across desert terrain. Changing it is dumb unless you have a specific need like crawling or mud.
My 4 bangers... look at the 20r! Carborator anyone?

Owned it seven years already. Have enjoyed every minute.

Before Softopper. Tailgate letters provided the "Scarlet Red & Gold" theme any good Marine would wear...

    Before sliders & armor

After 255/85R16, but before painting wheels

    After bronze rattle can

Yes they do. No CMC, no spacers, stock UCA, no lift, and even kept the mudflaps (not OEM). No problems.

Awesome, yeah I'm purely stock on SR trim, didn't see many people run the steelies in that size, good to know they fit. Does it lift the truck higher off the ground too? Was torn on 265/75 or 255/85 if they fit.

    Technically, yes it does.
Hold on to your hat now........ it will raise your axle center .75 inch!

(1.5 overall, divided by 2. 31.6 vs 33.1). Will you see that when you air-down for off road obstacles?
I went with /85 because I wanted more rubber between an obstacle and my rim. Got that by almost an inch.
I would rather have even skinnier (say maybe 225) but these were such a sweet deal from another TW member that I went with them. (All 4 less than 1k miles, mounted, w/ TPMS, w/ center caps, and lugs = $800)

Go to for these typer of questions.
Use the "Tire Comparison" tab. Plug in both sizes. It will show side by side comparison.

Do not go 255 on an auto 2.7 it will be terrible trying to maintain highway speeds. Stick with a 265/75 or even better a 235/85 Firestone xt is a great tire and not heavy in that size at 39-40lbs. Manual trans is completely different, I have a regeared 2.7 auto with a tune and header. Might not look as cool but keep the tire size to a minimal. I wouldn’t run a 255 and I’m regeared to 5.29s

Mine is a manual (5 spd) and it does great on the highway. Mostly. I will downshift on long grades, but that's the joy of driving a stick.
I have the Cooper ST Maxx. They are -heavy- !!
Great tires, fantastic traction, nice handling, no noise, etc. Hate to think about changing them, ever, ...but would like to experience all of those qualities AND have light weight. My search is on.

255/75/17 cooper at3 4s are lightweight and work great with the 4.30/MT/3RZ combo on mine.

Manual is the key difference you cant load up the engine with an automatic like you can in a stick, i have cooper at3 4s 265/75/16's with light weight 17.4lb wheels in a 5.29 regeared auto with header and tune and where i live i think its a tad too much tire. I will be switching to firestone xt 235/85/16 same height just thinner and 1lb less than my coopers. I really wish i would have picked up a 16 or 17 with a 5 speed, instead of my 21 auto.

When you get the 235/85s mounted and used a bit, please post how well they perform and how much you like them.
Earlier, I said I'd like to switch to 225. Hindsight tells me I should have said 235.
I think the 225 would feel squirrelly at higher speeds on pavement. Although --- others had said theirs did NOT feel that way.

I am so pleased with my '17 5-spd! I got very lucky to have found it.
Actually, my Bride found it and said, "let's go for a ride". We ended up at the Toyota dealership and she pointed it out. Drove it home that night. (Paid cash on the spot because VW had just bought back our Diesel Jetta). It just all fell into place.
