I am thinking on buying a boat and wanted to know if any of you have been towing with your 4 cylinder and what your experience has been with the weight and terrain on the 3rd gen.

    What size boat? Weight counts.

Just remember it's all about weight. The 2.7 does not come with an oil cooler or trans cooler if I'm not mistaken. So over long distances it could hurt the truck. An aluminum john boat or something smaller than 16ft could work.

I would keep weight under 2,000 lbs with the 2.7 liter.

Cool. Thanks for the replies. Was also hoping someone would post their experience towing with it.

A few OE parts from fancy trucks
How far? How big? How heavy? Towing terrain type? Difficulty of ramp or other launch conditions?

All are factors to the answer. It will tow the right thing under the right conditions just fine.

    1. Start with referencing your owners manual for towing specifications.
    2. There is a Tacoma Towing bible it has a lot of good references.
In reference to the statement by @0311K1LL the 2.7L may not have an engine oil cooler. It most certainly does have a transmission fluid cooler, it is integrated in the coolant radiator. People towing regularly add auxiliary transmission fluid coolers at their own pleasure.
I have found that in almost 20 years of towing lots of different trailers its not always about weight, length or height, it is more about being aware of your increased momentum and its associated limitations.

I tow a 6x12 enclosed trailer and have had a great experience with it. I do not get the same performance out of the truck with the trailer as I do without but that is expected. Don't expect your truck to ever seem as though it is not towing anything unless you are towing a 10' aluminum boat with trolling motor.

Not really related, but I hauled just under 1000lbs in the bed to the dumps, and my 2.7 manual towed it really well and handled great. It looked pretty well loaded. I was shocked when I saw the read out on the scales. It was construction debris tile wood ect.

As soon as I get my hitch installed, I'm going to try my Tractor Supply 5x8 utility trailer full of yard waste to see how it tows. I'm guessing loaded it will be around 2,000lbs.

I stand corrected, sorry lol. I figured tow packages have a trans cooler. I didn't notice one on my 2016 4 banger. TY Joe:)
