In my experience it seems like the reg cab mileage is getting shortchanged, not that the prerunner double cab is overestimated. I'm averaging 23 mpg and I bet I could get 25 if I tried.

Agreed. Apparently every vehicle with the 2.7 will get the exact same mileage.

I wanted to share the best mpg mods I've done since owning the truck (2.7L - extended cab - 2003 - 4x4).

    • Winter last year I was getting 13mpg city - no check engine line found out I had a bad spark plug (changed all 4 sparkplugs - 17mpg city)
    • Was getting 21mpg highway and stuttering in 4th gear at <35mph - cleaned the MAF sensor --> 22-24mpg highway
    • Pumped up the tires from 29psi to 40psi was getting 24mpg highway ---> now get 26-28mpg highway (& 20mpg highway at 85-90mph)
    • Installed a block heater this past thanksgiving (I have a short 5mile commute and the truck sits outside all winter) ---> getting 19-21mpg city now compared to 17mpg (block heater is only 400watts and pluging in overnight (free electricity here) gives a upper coolant hose temp of just over 110F in 30F weather
    future mpg mods include:
    scangauge or similar
    oil pan heater
cleaning the FI system or throttle intake w\e that thing is listed on the forms next to MAF sensor
Electric fan - if I ever get an extra $200

That is a great and believable story. Shows what can be accomplished when you put your mind to it. Especially like the way you went step by step. Very impressive.

Heres me at almost half a tank. I never calculate more than 17 or 18 mpg, the only drving at highway speeds I do is 3 miles on the freeway every morning to my High School, and the rest is city driving with a lot of hills. The truck only has 3000 miles on it so I'm hoping it gets better.

I still get in that range with all my current mods, so yes there is a chance in real world.

Gotta say, really liking the Ultraguage right about now. If it helps me with the MPGs this winter it will have paid for itself.

Have had mine for a year now, it will show you when you are wasting gas. But the big plus it that it will show you when you are doing the right things. And optimizing your coasting is one of the biggies.

Overall I am averageing 1.5 MPG better since I started using it. The last ten tanks have averaged 26.0 MPG. During the fall period in 2010 it was in the mid 24's.
