Mid 20s for a 4x4 is pretty decent, especially if you are running an automatic. Those long idles are killing your FE for sure. Perhaps there is another, less traveled route to take? Maybe offset your start and stop times at work to travel when traffic is lighter? Good luck setting your next best number!

Getting 29MPG @ 65MPH on interstates. It's a 2WD 2.4L 5 speed. Should be able to get better than 30MPG at 55 to 60MPH, but have not tested "yet" on interstates at 55 to 60. Will document with photos when I can test it on a trip "unloaded" & slow down a little.

4WD here. I averaged 20.5-21 MPG doing 80 MPH on a 75 mile commute that is roughly 95% highway.

Last week I dropped to 70MPH and attained 23.1 MPG.

Crappy tank this week. All time low of 19mpg. I know why also. I just got an exhaust and wanted to hear it all week. Aiming for 26+ now

Dangit. Looks like I need to start shifting at 2k rpms and drive under 70 mph to see over 20 mpg again. Shame I won't be able to make it up any of the hills I have to drive over.

The best I ever saw was back when the truck only had a few thousand miles on it. I was driving to Alaska through Canada and was seeing 25+ mpg in my 2005 4x4 base model doing 400+ miles of highway a day. Since then, I'm happy if I see 21 and elated if I see 23. I'm thinking the URD supercharger may be helpful for me with all the hills I need to deal with.

Backed that up this week with another 70MPH max commute, 23.3 MPG

I'm going to try 65 MPH next week

The hills here make FE more challenging for sure, but if you do get your shift points around 2K and you keep it under 65, you should be around 23 mpgs I would think. Go even slower, the mpgs will increase, perhaps 7-10% @ 55-60 mph. If you can, drive off-peak hours to and from work or when running errands. This will help. Good luck!

Thanks. My daily commute is from the Northwest Hills down to West Haven and back. Lots of hills through that trip and significant elevation change. I'm also out to the West Hartford/Farmington area a couple times a week.

I have a feeling I have some issue with a clogged cat, clogged fuel filter on pump, plugs getting to the end of their life, and some minor clutch issues. I'm creeping up on 100k miles at the moment. I suspect clutch issues because I'm done some serious towing with the little 2.7 and it surely was worked hard. I don't get "slipping" but it just doesn't feel right. Hopefully over the next year all of this will be replaced with new parts and I may opt for the supercharger. Funds will dictate that but all planed replacements should be an upgrade. I already have the full synthetic treatment running Amsoil in everything.

I used to commute from Branford to Seymour through New/West Haven. For sure those hills are hurting your MPGs. Keep in mind though that for you, your goals are set against the cards (hills) you've been dealt, so your target values will be different than say my own. And towing will change your goal even more. That said, you create the challenge that you want to achieve.

As some information, I had my cat. stolen a few weeks back, so I'm running on a new cat. From what I can tell, my MPGs may have gone down slightly, but it may also be from the cooler air now that Fall is here. So I'm not too concerned. I'm at 68K though, so do some research here and ask questions regarding longevity of the cat. At $1350 installed (for a single cat), it's an expensive change that unless you need to do it (failing emissions/CEL), you are better off holding onto your money. I'm a big fan of running synthetic oil for better efficiency and easier starting during the cold winter (my truck sits outside). Keeping up on the general maintenance and keeping the engine tuned is the right play, so as you suspect, changing plugs/filters when recommended is the right idea. Another thing you can try is finding an alternate route that might be easier on the fuel consumption. Have a look at CleanMPG.com for tips on driving smarter/more fuel savvy...you might find a tip or two there that you can leverage. Check out the 4x4 section and of course, check with your fellow Tacoma owners here in this thread. Some of the folks here are posting pretty awesome numbers, but keep things in perspective - most aren't towing and some have flatter terrains than you have...but some are climbing mountains. Either way, enjoy the challenge and saving money on your fuel budget. You are that much closer to your supercharger...if that's your fancy!!

Just balanced my book. Averaging 22.35 with the 22R-E. Getting new wheels and tires this month. New exhaust from the header back, new spark plugs/wires etc, synthetic fluids all shortly. Then I'll update again. hopefully I can bring it up a bit. Somewhere down the road I'll be regearing to 4.56 and locking at least the rear. That should change things a wee bit also.

Winter won't help my average. I like to romp in the snow :)

You can't get a proper MPG reading on a partial fill-up.

Unless I guess you're filling the top half of the tank :D

I'm feeling some pressure, no one has gotten this close to my best tanks.

    Good job.

Look at his swings and his average.
He's getting as many tanks at 23 as he is above 30.
