It's called wheeling and I know the partial fill doesn't count. I don't always TRY to achieve maximum mpg on a tank I do it when I feel like it.

Definite rollercoaster. But it looks like heavy city is driving things down and highway brings it back.

Decent numbers with your autotranny, so you aren't too far off the pace. It'll be harder to reach 30 with your configuration, but you should be able to post numbers in the upper 20s. It's the challenge to see if you can do it once anyway over a full tank. It'll get harder as the temps start to drop, so it might be a summertime goal. Good luck!

30+ ain't gonna' happen without some of the more extreme hypermiling methods that you can't do with an automatic trans.

Manual you can shut it down when rolling down hill. That can make a BIG difference. Do that with an auto and you'll smoke the trans without the front pump running.
Even dropping into neutral while rolling downhill can damage the trans since the idling engine may not provide enough pressure for adequate lubrication while moving.

Installing LSDs this winter and regearing from 4.10 to 4.56 since it'll be open. I'm not necessarily doing this for the mpgs but any guess on what kind of gain I'll see (city/hwy)? I'm only going from a 31x10.5x15 to a 265/75r16 so less than an inch taller and am averaging about 22.35 mpg thus far. maybe 1-2 mpg? :D

Depends I think on the driving you mostly do. Switching to 4:56 could help you if most of your driving is done around town. If you do more highway driving, something in the high 3:s would probably help you out more. The trouble with gearing in the 3:s with larger tires and the 4 cylinder, getting off the line at a stoplight might drive you mad.

Hopefully others following the thread can confirm or revise my theory here.

I'm going to aim for that this summer. I'm running 200 miles at the middle mark so far in cold weather so it's not that bad.

I'm assuming they're just like fuel-injector cleaners but in pill form? Pretty odd but I wouldn't trust it enough to put it in mine XD

From what I've read it'll help in town quite a bit and hurt on the highway a wee bit. I'm in town most of the time, but do drive 7.5 hours there and 7.5 hours back to South Dakota once every month or two. . . I've never regeared so I'm trying to feel it out. Don't wanna pay out the but and then hate it, but if it will help I'm going to have the diffs open anyways. . ha I have time, I shall research on

Sounds about right David. I think I'm averaging around 105 to 107 a quarter tank, so I'm around 200 at a half tank. If I drive into work early and come home late, off peak driving hours, I can squeeze out a few more miles. Right around 23 MPGs at the moment. Coming up to an oil change shortly, so I'll move to synthetics. Maybe a small bump there.

In my Ranger (4 cyl, 2wd), I would be able to get 27-28 MPGs during the winter with 100% highway driving. I got rid of it before the spring/summer months, but I'm pretty sure I would have gotten 30 MPGs on the highway. Trucks can do it as evident here, but Rich is right: with our autotrannies, getting our 4x4s to get 30 MPGs will be very difficult. I suspect that it would require some drastic measures (aero mods, 0W-20W synthetics, AC off, windows up, and who knows what else).

Good luck with the challenge though!

That's the right move Chaz. If your opening up things, good practice to see what other benefits might be leveraged. The usual change the timing belt and the water pump move. Pay the labor once (or elbow grease as it may be) and get what you want.

I was thinking that getting better rear gearing in my Ranger was going to help with some accelaration...and while doing the research, found out that the 4:10s in my truck was the optimal solution. Sometimes those Engineers get things well matched. Adding the larger wheels/tires though changes the equation. I suspect that if I did that, I'd want to regear the rear to suit optimal performance for my main driving. I do mostly around town driving to, so I prefer gearing around 4:10 to provide good average acceleration and decent highway mileage. Tweak, tweak, tweak...optimize the vehicle to suit yourself. Good luck!!

Never really tried to get the best milage i could but i dont think it will be much diff with my lift and tire setup

I wouldn't just regear the rear man, I'd think you'll get much farther doing both front and rear if you ever do decide to change it up haha

If i drove mostly city or mostly highway I'd have an easy answer but I do both a lot . . .

Sorry about derailing the thread. No more gears talk

Last tank sucked, something like 20mpg, I may not see good gas mileage until next spring as snow is coming and I can't resist a little fun here and there :D

    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/tirecalc.php

Input your stock tire size and your current tire size in the Tire Size Calculator

The difference in circumference is multiplied by your miles to show true mileage.
My tires are 11.7% larger than stock right now so I multiply the mpg I calculate by 1.117 to find actual-ish. . .

I think that discussing tire size/error and gearing are on topic with the fuel challenge. Just as the autotranny group can't post numbers like the folks with manuals (of similar configurations) folks with lifts and larger tires can post against others with similar configurations. It's all relative.

And it's good information - I like the look of a lifted vehicle, so if I were to do it, having the data on the FE might sway me one way or the other. Now I'm too old to climb that high regularly...but the lifted '85 Toyota in Back To The Future sold me on the look!
