Yep, wind makes a big difference. Tonight I drove from Boulder to Longmont which is heading north east and with a mild wind I got 37 mpg to and 28 mpg back.

I forgot to mention Longmont is 10 cent cheaper than Boulder and I get a discount from Safeway so I paid $2.799 instead of $3.499

Chevron gives discounts on Vons Club (Safeway), but the points expire every 30 days... totally worthless because it takes $200 to get any money off on gas and we don't spend $200 at Vons in 6 months.

Still haven't cracked a 25 mpg tank. Last two were 24.2 and 24.4. This cold weather and flooding rain needs to go away! The middle of April and it was snowing today.

I couldn't hardly believe the tailwind I had yesterday on the way home. The ultragauge was reading 40-50 mpg on the flat and high 20s going uphill. I thought maybe I'd screwed up the MAF when I sprayed it out! Only when I got out did I realize the air was moving as fast as the truck was :p

Talk about a missed P&G opportunity.

Ah, I see. As much as I like saving $$$ at the pumps, I don't think I have the patience to be a hypermiler.

My 27mpg tank certainly wasn't using any hypermiling techniques...quite the opposite actually (especially when it came to the asshat Quebecers I came across on the highway). I also had 100lbs of dogs in the cab with me and about 300lbs of miscellaneous crap in the bed (sand bags, tools, etc). Also running larger than stock tires on the stock 5-lug gearing, meaning I need to gear down to 4th (and sometimes 3rd!) and give 'er on big hills...ugh, I hate that! lol
Nice. Thanks for the link dood. :)

The thing of it is that while you can target a bigger number posted by another fellow enthusiast (WW is an 'unusual' enthusiast to emulate:D), you always can best-your-best keeping it within the realm of your own experiences. I'd love to pull the numbers WW, Rich, and others are getting, but fairly unrealistic in my vehicles configuration. So, I enjoy the challenge of doing better on the next gallon of fuel relative to the last (or tank, or round of golf). Enjoy the challenge and shave a couple of tenths of fuel on the next go around.

One thing I noticed when pumping gas is that I can put more fuel in the tank when parked on a slight downhill slope. With our huge 21 gallon tanks, this can throw off MPGs a bit. I really thought I was going to get more than 28 MPG this time around based on what the fuel gauge was reading (the last tick mark before "E"), but when filled up and did calculations, got 27. The gas station where I did the last fill-up was sloped quite a bit and got an extra half gallon or so more than usual.

    Thought I'd share :]

Just got back from a other long drive...28.30mpg. Again...300lbs+ in the bed, plus dogs in cab. I threw on a 14" Magnaflow muffler just before this trip too. Feels like I've lost a bit of low-end as I found myself gearing down a little more than usual...but it sounds freaking amazing so it's not going anywhere!

Nice! My city-driving skills leave something to be desired when it comes to fuel economy. :)

Great numbers people! I enjoy seeing updates in this thread.

Just went 457.2 miles on 18.74 gallons, average 24.4mpg. I've seen slightly higher mpg numbers and have gone a bit further on a single tank but this was a really good one. I went about 40 miles after the light came on, which I have never done before... brought along a gas jug just in case :) And this was driving my normal routine which is about 50/50 city/highway! I love this truck.

Wow...is that mostly highway? I'm scared to think what my mileage will drop to if I get 32x11.5's (or even 33x12.5!)

Well that's with P rated dueler revo 2s. They are only 46lbs each. I also drive extremely conservative. But it did also include about 25 mins of mudding

How are you guys getting 20 to 25 mpg and over 300 to 400 on a tank? Please tell me lol. I have an 04 2.7 with 31s tires and put on a afe pro dry flow filter and lucky to get 270 on a tank. It does have 75k on it but what ever I do, or drive super slow, I still can't get to 300 on a tank no matter how I drive. Idk what's going on. I do alot of highway driving and mixed with st driving. I'm gonna do my plugs and change all oils and see how that works but I don't think I will ever get over 16 mpg lol. It sucks.

My mileage is suffering now that my driving is now 40% highway. When I was driving 90% highway I was getting 300+ a tank, now I am getting lucky if I reach 300 on 17 gallons.

Just filled up to avoid losing grocery store discounts. 191.4 miles - 9.75 gallons = 19.6 MPG Please take into consideration that figure is for 1 months of 3.5 mile trips back and forth to work. Just have not needed to go anywhere. Going on a month of not getting the truck fully warmed up. Probably ought to take it down the highway and get the water out of the oil.:D

The air filter is not helping you.

But the main thing... 2nd Gen carries 21 gallons of fuel, so an '04 and an '08, both getting 25mpg, are going to see a 75-100 mile difference before the low fuel light comes on.

Also, the best numbers you're seeing in the thread are coming from the 5-lug trucks like mine. I can reliably go 400 per tank without a problem... generally won't even see the light until I pass 400, and a couple of tanks have been good enough to where I could have made 500 on a tank.

Prerunners and 4x4s are not going to do as well. Stock tires for a 5-lug are 205/70-15... that's a 26" tire. Prerunners and 4x4s run a 30" tire, and the extra 40-60mm width increases rolling resistance.
