I really need to get back into a truck. I've been a Toyota guy since '84 but the 2016 & 2017 6 cylinders have turned me off. I started looking at the 4 cyl threads with a manual and I'm thinking that may suit my needs.
Today I started looking at some of the 2018 sites and there is a lot of talk about a new turbo charged 4 banger. 230 hp and 250 ft lbs torque. IF this is true would this be capable of towing a trailer? Either a fully loaded u haul or travel trailer. It doesn't do me much good to buy a truck if I can't use it.

Ditto, please share. If a major majority of people aren't happy as of now with a smaller displacement, higher revving 3.5 v6, I don't think Toyota would ever want to put a Gas Turbo 4 in a mid sized truck or any truck for that matter even if it is to replace the 2.7. Just sounds like "rumors" as always.

    Here is one: http://carttraction.com/2018-toyota-tacoma/

I pulled up a trailer site and reasonably I could expect 4,000 lbs

The 6MT behind the 3.5L is a beast. I tow 2000lbs regularly in a 6x12 enclosed flat-noses trailer. Around 2500RPM (62mph in 5th, 72mph in 6th) the truck has a hard time not trying to speed up. Up against my 2011 AT with a 4.0, there is NO contest. The 3.5 stomps the 4.0 into a mudhole and then stomps it dry.

You can sit there and wait for a pipedream, or go with tried and true.

That actually doesn't seem that bad. I like that low end torque from 1650-4000. I would want more tq though

258 lbs may not sound like much. But when it's available at 1600 rpm.....that's pretty stout

Just to complete the story of the third gen... The 6AT towing does fine as well. I regularly tow 2-3K in a 5x8 and in S4 w/ETC there are 0 problems. S4 is right at 3k RPM @ 70 MPH and S5 is probably about 500-700 RPM less. I use cruise mostly as the truck wants to go faster than I like to tow at if I don't watch it. I honestly try to stick to S4 though mostly per the manual.

Bottom line is these "little" V-6's have no problem towing at highway speeds. The extra HP and Torque of the V-6 would be superior to the hypothetical turbo 4 IMO.

What kind of mileage do you get at those RPMs?

The ONLY issue I have (and this is a strictly personal issue) is 3K has tons of power but dang it's loud.

It varies with terrain of course, and wind, but 13-17 MPG i'd say. Once I got a full blue bar drafting off a semi for almost 10 miles once though... S5 is much better, but its OD so I try to avoid it. Honestly the noise part I don't notice.

I'd see Toyota bringing over the Diesel before they do a gas turbo 4. I think the current 4cyl engine is due for a refresh. Unfortunatly it will probably be a variant of the new refreshed Camry 4cyl.

Payload capacity is all the same for single axle enclosed trailers so I bought the one I found most useful for my application. My trailer has a V-nose as well, so that's undoubtedly where the big/any difference comes from. TBH, I don't concern myself too much with MPG's when towing, it is what it is.
