    I am currently looking for a hitch for my 4cyl reg cab but most are set up for the 6 cyl tacoma's. Our little 4 bangers are only rated to tow 3500lbs, in which case the bumper is rated for 3500 so it makes a hitch almost pointless.

    The problem I am having with the bumper ball is that my trailer sits too high and eats away at the plastic on sharp turns. So my question is, has anybody seen a hitch for our 4 cyls that is similar to the new ram pickup type?

    If there were to be a bolt on setup like this it would lower the mounting point for the trailer and allow easy mounting of the sway chains.

    You're overthinking it, IMO.

    Just get a frame hitch, install it, and be done.

    Sturdy enough to support whatever you tow, no worries of ever tweaking the bumper with too much tongue weight, and they don't cost enough that it's really worth looking for a cheaper solution.

    I second the recommendation for a frame hitch. I used something similar to your picture on a T100. After a few trips on a rough road towing a trailer I noticed the bumper supports were breaking. Had to change to a frame hitch, which works a lot better.

    Hate to say but in this case eBay is your friend boss.

    Curt Class III hitch for our truck on average might be 150 bucks,

    Doesn't need to be a factory one, I had a Hidden Hitch on mine for years and it was fine. Install was easy, no drilling and only cost about $175.

    A few OE parts from fancy trucks
    On my Sonoma I had one of the small Reese pieces, similar to what you pictured, bolted on through the bumper step.

    But I did not use it to tow, although I suppose it would have been ok with little loads. What I used it for was my extend a bed rack to support my kayak or for a bike rack.

    I even took it off when I gave the truck away, as I didn't want someone trying to tow with it by mistake.

    On the '13 Tacoma I just put on a proper receiver hitch, a

    Curt 13323. Amazon, $138 at the time.

    That's the beauty of the 4cyl trucks, no need to have trans coolers and the like,
    Just get a hitch, install it and call it a day.

    No please use your brain when you go to tow something. lol...

    Your not going to run 70 uphill with a 26' Ski Nautique behind ya, hahaha

    I hope you score a hitch and get a good deal on one.

    I got a nearly new OEM receiver, hitch, and ball for $120 I think. Not up for sale too often (OEM), but you can get an aftermarket receiver online for pretty close to what I paid.

    I got a $120 Uhaul hidden hitch that hung low(not so hidden) and installed it myself easily in my driveway. It rusted badly within a year. I then purchased an OEM hitch for $300. 2yrs later no rust and it tucks much higher up into the bumper for a cleaner look.

    I also have a 4cyl, just put a drawtight Class V hitch on I know overkill right but it does help stiffen up the frame nicely. Just go for it.

    I bought a class IV hitch on eBay for $90. Built by Valley Industries. Added a Curt wiring harness. Took less than an hour to install both of them. The way to go in my opinion.

    Was that fairly recent? If I can't find an OEM one id prefer the valley type because it mounts like the oem one, to the frame and under the bumper. The reason I want OEM is because of the clean install. I understand i can get any aftermarket hitch but I still want the truck to look good. ;)

    *edit* Looking on ebay I now see the 2nd gen curt hitches have the bumper bolts aswell. However on the curt website it does not, can anyone with a curt 13323 confirm the tabs?

    I did the cheap route for 3 reasons. Low tow weight anyway, and $25 plus i plan on a better bumper. I didnt, dont, see any reason to spend more or more time installing for a better setup when i still cant tow more weight at the end.

    However with the design of the factory bumper the bolt holes are not in good spots, i took an extra 5 minutes to do a little welding to make it a little more solid and unfortunately a little more redneck looking.
