4 cyl. gas mileage

Last check was 19.6 on the scanguage, with 180lbs in the back, cold weather, city driving.

 

I went on ~350 mile trip, my MPG was 25.4

 

I checked mine for the first time yesterday (manual tranny). Over 330 miles it was about half city driving, 150 miles on the interstate with the cruise set at 75 and about 20 miles pulling a heavy trailer up and down country roads. Got right at 21 average. I was pretty happy with that since I traded in a Dodge Ram that struggles to get 11 mpg.

 

I have a 99 2.7. i get maybe 15 in town, and on a 190 trip last weekend, i got 13 on the highway. The milage kinda sucks. but the truck is big fun.

 

I was averaging a bit over 28 MPG mixed highway/city during the summer. Locally they switched to the winter formula gas and I'm down to 26.5 for the last 2 tanks.

 

Maybe the fact i drive 90-95mph is way i only get 20-22mpg!!! lol

 

According to this post, what would be the best RPM to keep the vehicle in during high way driving? I4 2.7L 265/75/16 Access cab 5-spd manual 4.10 Gearing

 

My '02 2.7 ,automatic just avg'd 26 mpg with a load,cruise at 70 in the rain ( will it ever stop?).this is a 4x4 x-tra cab ......Daily driving back and forth to the "Mack" office can usually get 20-23 IF I keep my foot out of it...

Only "perf's" added are factory re-tune at 25k and a K&N filter( not the CAI).....

I just took a 1000 km trip and on one tank I got 713kms. This worked out to 25.6 MPG (imperial gal.) AC on half the time, acutal 65 - 70 MPH
I think the people getting no so great mileage with their 4 cylinders, would be the ones getting brutal mileage with the V6, FWIW.

 

i get an average of 23 mpg on both highway and in town driving. haha

 

Your mileage is not bad considering the speed you are driving. My driving 1/2h 1/2c average is 24.1 (see attch), hwy mostly at .60% load. Record (hwy only- No load on back) is 33.4 MPG. However, I drive at 55-60 MPH which most of you would never consider driving. City driving watching trafic ligths ahead and going easy on breking and acceleraring.

 

I have never got over 21mpg so far- 10,000 on the odo- lots of around town stuff, if I go on the highway, I usually run around 80mph, but never get mixed driving hwy/city over 21mpg. I may try to run 70 mph next road trip to see if things improve. Was hoping for more...

Worst mpg was through the hills of Virginia. For some reason the return trip was worse. I had only 1 tank that got 21 mpg (imperial).

Rest were about 27mpg. Best was 33. Had a 32 and a 31.
EPA rating says 36mpg. Unloaded with cruise on non-mountainous roads, I could see it possible.

Previous tests with a Pontiac Vibe I owned showed a 2mpg difference between 60mph and 70 mph. The Taco seems to naturally gravitate to 70mph ... then it could just be me

Yeah, the mileage doesn't suck

 

I took a trip back home and average about 26 MPG. I had more weight in the truck, it ran great.

 

Getting 23.4 mpg average for 2300 miles so far. Drive fairly gently, sometimes skip third or fourth gear depending on load.

 

I have read on here that if you use the middle octane gas that though its more expensive that the extra bit helps you engine run smoother and gas mileage increases a bit and you will be spending about the same and you can feel the power change and with a manual you get better gas mileage

 

You can read about the difference between regular and premium on the Kawasaki Vulcan 750 forum. Conclusion is regular gives better mileage because it has more heat value per gallon. Anti-knock and other additives take up room in the mixture and reduce heat value. Yes, higher octane can allow the timing to advance a bit more, but I have to believe the factory has the timing right up to the edge of knocking already.

 

Pretty sure you will find that the ECU controls the timing on modern fuel FI engines. For the first time last evening I filled up with 89 octane. So far I cant tell any difference in the way it runs. I only did this to test the mileage difference. Recently I had a tank which was almost all in town, less than 4 mile trips, lots of traffic lights and never over 45MPH. My mileage was 23 MPG, down only 2 MPG from my usual 70/30% Hwy/City numbers. This impressed me. People ask why I buy 4 cyl engines, unlike 6 and 8 cyl engines, 4 cyl engines retain their good mileage in stop and go traffic.

I've noticed my driving habits have the biggest impact on mileage.
If my foot is a bit heavy mileage drops to about 20.
Hauled a trailer (2800lbs, bulky with high drag) and kept my 2.7 at 75 for 200 miles and mileage was 10.7mpg (To maintain the speed with the high drag I had to keep my foot to the floor and downshift as needed to 4th). Then 2 weeks later I caravanned out to Texas with the lead crawling along at 65 in an 80 mph area and mileage jumped to 30.3mpg so did some digging and found a rough equation that actually kind of added up, it was put out by Toyota concerning the mileage, and how speed affects it.(Wish I remembered where I read it I'd include the link) The article stated that for every 5mph over 60mph expect a decrease in mpg of approximately 1.5 mpg. It also said each engine would vary slightly on its efficiency. I have noticed that I loose about 3 to 3.5 for every 5mph above 70mph, but get my peak milage at about 63. So, since I track my mileage regularly I put it to the test and added it all up and have brought my mileage up 2.3 mpg, I was averaging 21.5 to 22mpg and now am at 23.8 to 24 mpg 60% highway/40% city.
This has meant that I never exceed the speed limit, and occasionally go 5 under depending on the state. I don't do 80 in Texas as I only get 20mpg at 80mph vs. 24-25mpg at 70mph.
Overall I have brought my annual savings on gas up to about $400. It is painfull to keep it all in check at times though especially when your in a hurry.
