I have 342,xxx trouble free miles on my 2001 TRD OR 2.7 as well. So far I have replaced 1 radiator, 1 alternator, and 1 valve cover gasket and it is a daily driver, I have a 2018 TRD OR as well auto with 3.5 but had rather drive the 2001.

Same here, I have a 2018 TRD 3.5 as well, but still drive the '96 quite a bit. I still have the original radiator, replaced 1 alternator, 1 fuel pump, 2 starters, no gaskets.

Pulled a loaded 4500# trailer over the PA hills and valleys last weekend. I know what you mean.

Big difference in size of both generations. That little one must be super peppy!

The 1st gen 4cyls with the 5 speed can be pretty peppy, but with the auto trans they're dogs IMO. Makes me really wonder how they've continued to put the 4 banger into the larger 2nd and 3rd gens. Although I suppose they have improved it with changes over the years. But with the manual at least you can really wind out the engine and bring the power out of it.

My '01 is an access cab 2.7 with 5 speed and for what the 4 banger is (150 HP in my '01 model best I remember) with the 5 speed you can wind them up and they do pretty good, but my '01 weighs in at 3,700 lb so they are not as heavy as the new ones. You gotta love the Toyota 4 cylinders, the 2.7 is as good if not better than the older 20R and 22R/RE, I had a 22R in an '86 4x4 and for roughly 100 HP it would impress you with what it could do.

For sure, they are virtually indestructible little engines when normally cared for (and sometimes even when abused). But especially with the auto trans, they aren't going to get you anywhere fast lol. But I suspect the people that buy them are well aware of that usually...they're more invested in the longevity and reliability of them more than anything.

    I believe it.

I had a 95 4runner with the 3VZE (V6). Loved that engine despite its terrible reputation among Toyota enthusiasts. Believe it or not, the current 2.7L 4-cylinder engine produces more power and torque than that V6... Even with the V6 though, the torque was incredible in low range. It definitely struggled up long grades at highways speeds, but it was unstoppable off road. I even used it to move 3 ft diameter x 10-15 ft long dead trees for cutting.

What year did Toyota stop using the 22RE (2.4)? I'm pretty sure they started around '83 or '84 and ran until sometime in the 2000's. The 2.7 came out in 95 1/2 (96 year model Tacoma) and was used in the 4x4 and the Pre-Runner with the 2.4 still being used in the 2wd. The 2.4 had to have had close to a 30 year run and the 2.7 is now pushing 25 years in service. That speaks volumes for the little 4 bangers, especially when you think about the 6 cylinders they have out lived.

They stopped using the 22re in the US when the Tacoma came around in 1995.5, when the 2.4/2.7l 4cyl took over. Which is still based on the old 22re engine from what I've read

Although the 4runner used the 22re as well, I'm not sure if they switched to the 2.7l at the same time or not

The 22r, 2/3rz and 2tr are all time and platform tested, known globally as indestructible. They switched over when OBD became a thing.

People in this forum often say things like “The current v6 will prove to be just as indestructible as the I4, time will tell”

Time has already told. Look at the front page of this forum.

    I had a 2019 Tacoma SR 2.7L. I agree, it’s a quiet, smooth engine.

Dealer did not have the taillights in stock and the service mgr indicated that driving the Sport with foggy taillights was a safety issue due to reduced visibility. He offered me a 2020 SR or a Prius as a loaner until the parts arrived on the following day.

Kind of nice that I was offered the loaner without asking for it.

If there were a 5-6 spead stick, I'd be looking hard.
If a 5 lug, I'd have one already.

Yes, there is little you can say bad about the long lived 2.7. I’ve had several vehicles with them. No one is dissing the 2.7 when buying a vehicle with a 4.0 or 3.5. They’re just better overall.
