I would like to test drive a 4 cyl just to feel the difference, but none of the dealerships around me have one.

Get the 6. My opinion is that the first gen was the last truck where a 4cyl was worth it. These bigger trucks seem to like the 6cyl. But there was a second gen 4cyl that hit 1,000,000mi so it’s doable.

I had a 2016 ac 4 cly and was completely happy with it. Unlike some I thought it had plenty of power and I know the engine is completely reliable. My circumstances Changed this year and I needed a double cab, so I of course have the V6 now. I am getting nearly the same mileage and so far I’m completely happy. It has a lot more technology and therefore will likely cost more in repairs down the road if I keep this truck long term. It remains to be seen how reliable the new 3.5 will be. The resale value will likely be higher with the V6.

I have the 4 banger lifted on 33s. It sucks on the highway. Can’t go above 78 without a crazy gear hunt.

Doesn’t have crazy torque but it does have some, so towing around town is doable but forget about towing on the highway.

Other than that, great truck that will last a really long time. I personally love how mine turned out, but interstate trips are a pain in the ass bc I go 72 in the slow lane and try to be happy about it.

Great truck, proven motor, but it’s a dog with the 3rd gen body. Chose carefully. The gas mileage is maybe 1-2mpg better in town, but I think the v6 does better at pushing its own weight on the interstate.

I like it with my access cab, but I wouldn't want it with a double cab. Then again if I'm going double cab I'm just going to get a Tundra anyway

SR5 would be the way to go for me, too. Pretty sure remote keyless entry can be added after the fact, and intermittent wipers can for sure, but for the easy factor I think SR5 is best. Not sure the other differences between the two trims.

The true cost of ownership is the difference between what you pay for it, maintenance costs and what you sell it for.

The lower price of the 4 cylinder may not necessarily equal savings in the long run.

The 4 cylinder engine has proven it's super reliable and the 6 cylinder has yet to prove it's long term reliability.

With that being said.. Toyota has put their a$$ on the line with this engine. Look how many models are running the v6 2GR-FKS (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_GR_engine). By the time model production has evolved there will be a couple (few or more?) million of these motors in the US.

They're both great engines and you probably cannot go too wrong (as resale on 3rd gens continues the Tacoma tradition of $ retention.)

You've received a lot of good advice in this thread. Take your time, drive both and be patient for a deal. Good luck.

Get a MT for greater flexibility. Shift and stay around 2000 rpm for maximum fuel economy or run it up to 4-5000rpm for best power.

I have a 2017 4cyl 5spd and live in the Sierra’s. Yes it is slow on the bigger hills. Currently averaging just a bit over 25mpg commuting 130mi a day into Reno. I am happy enough with it and for sure would be happy in Tx with it where its flat.

The 4cyl isn’t a downside. Unless youre towing a boat.

I keep forgetting it’s 2019. If it’s a 4cyl auto I can’t recommend it unless you prioritize engine longevity over power.

Obviously it's both a car and a truck engine. It's the power-plant that Toyota is throwing almost all their resources into.

    What's your point?

I have the 2.7 coupled with a 5 speed manual transmission. Too bad this configuration is no longer available.

The 3rd generation is a bigger, heavier truck than previous generations. I have the V6 with the auto tranny and, after learning my habits and the truck's idiosyncrasies, I'm glad to have it. She'll get up and run once you figure it out. The plus is that I average, most of the time, 24+MPG..

if you're getting double cab then v6 for sure. if you're getting access cab (500 lbs lighter) or not towing anything the i4 is fine.
