    Ok, this thread is over, you've run out of points with which to try to refute and have resorted to name calling.

    Anyway in all seriousness the OP is talking about a 4 cyl and the pros and cons of the transmission whether it be a manual or an automatic. then moondeath started going on about the v6 so i dont see how this all got out of hand in the first place. @Chupa in my opinion the manual 5 speed is 1) fun to drive 2) better on slopes (up or downhill) 3) can possibly save you gas money if you drive it wisely with that goal and 4) autos suck

    For what it is worth, I have a '14 SR5 with an auto. I drive a lot of highway, put on about 100mi round trip on my daily commute to work etc. Our interstates are fairly hilly terrain too. I have no problem with my 4cyl. Great little engine. Ya if you get held up on a hill and need to get it wound up again to pass or go up a hill, it is a bit more work than a manual or a v6. But I think if the 4cyl fits your needs, then it is a great option. I wanted the most reliable, easiest to maintain, best fuel economy out of my truck, so I tried the 4cyl. It impressed me enough (I even got to test it on the highway before buying) to buy it. I tested a 2nd gen and 3rd gen v6 before deciding. All great trucks. It's all in what you want. I didn't feel like driving a manual again, so I did not consider the manual.

    Thats why I asked if he was going for the 4 cylinder because it was cheaper of for mpgs. I was just trying to get the point across that mpgs arent that different if that was the reason. If he just wants a 4 cylinder than it doenst matter.

    Except that the mpg ARE THAT different.
    Expect 16-17 with 6-cyl, or 24-25 with the 4-cyl.

    yeah and i agree not much different but every little bit helps if that is his goal in mind. and if he is worried about power when off roading and/or lift and tires then re-gearing would be sufficient for the 4 cyl

    OP - You will absolutely love the 4 cyl/5spd combo for your purposes of steep logging roads and off roading That is EXACTLY what I use mine for and I carry 500-1000 lbs of gear. The gearing of a stock 4 cylinder 5 speed access cab is ideal for this purpose. You've got a 4:1 1st gear which is lower than most vehicles, a 2.3:1 Tcase, and a 4.11 in the axles which is also lower than your typical car or truck. 1st gear in 4-low is therefore an absolute monster and the truck will climb anything. Your tires will be your limiting factor when things get super steep and you'll start sliding backwards before you have to worry about engine torque.

    FYI - if you don't need the extra storage space a regular cab would be even better

    Not really. Again, Fuel.gov has the v6 at around 21-22 mpgs depending on the year. I get about 21 out of mine. Saving 4 mpgs isnt that much to me of have a motor that can do extra work. But thats me.

    Seriously you need to take a class at online communication. I don't think you understand how to use caps when you are trying to get your point across.

    Caps = Yelling.

    As if you can trust anything ".gov"....
    Also, ability to do "extra work" is debatable, since you run into the chassis limits before you run into the engine limits, regardless of which engine you have.

    Yeah, no quarrels there. Just pointing out to someone who is in the prowel to think about all options, and not regret a purchase.

    That's about all that you can fairly compare, since soon as you start tinkering with ANYTHING, you no longer have any basis for comparison.

    Caps = YELLING, WHEN THERE ARE NO LOWER CASE CHARACTERS IN THE STATEMENT.
    Caps = EMPHASIS, when mixed into a statement.

    Ok. Ability to do extra work is not 'debatable'. It either can or it cant. Is there a debate team at toyota that argues about truck abilities?
