    Hello All,

I'm in Socal (San Diego) and I'm currently in the market for a 1st gen (or 2nd gen) Tacoma. However i'm wondering if they make double cab (4 full doors) with a 4 cylinder?

Also if they do, what is it capable of towing? I have a 22' boat and trailer that weighs about 3000lb loaded and was hoping this was ok for it. I don't tow very far only about 10 min to the launch ramp.

Looking for economy and simplicity (coming from a Dodge Ram 2500 cummins *22mpg* and a 9,000lb boat and trailer).

    Thanks in advance.

Welcome to TW first off! My 01 with a 4 cyl can pull 3000lb but I do it carefully and at slower speeds. As far as a DC 4cyl I know they made some prerunners with that option but not sure if 4x4's have 4yl

Cool thanks for the reply. I'm not needing 4x4. Glad to see there are some available, I will just have to take my time and scour the internet.

Tows to the launch ramp will be maybe 2-4 times a month (once a week at most). I do have a bit of a climb up the hill to my house (1/4 mile) but I can take it slow and easy.

This will be basically a "chores" truck (small trips to grocery store, home depot, etc). I am pretty much over F250s, Ram2500s, full size long beds, etc.

Yep! I almost bought one with only 70k miles in FL, but never ended up buying it. I understand being over the big diesel trucks. I have no problem pulling the boat up the ramp I have an 17ft flats boat

If you’re looking to tow do not buy a four cylinder. The v6 is what you want with a towing capacity of 5,500.

I have a 02 4 cylinder double cab prerunner and I wouldn’t tow anything with it. It’s slow without towing. Only reason I have it is my dad gave it to me.

I'm sure it can tow a little. But once a week, your transmission will be cooked in no time with the 4cyl

A 4cyl doublecab: You have the smallest engine pulling the heaviest Tacoma, and you want to tow near the max capacity, too??? Yikes

3500 is the MAX a 4cyl can pull. I've towed 2500# with my v6 and I can tell you I wouldn't want to pull any more than that on a regular basis *with my v6*.

Prerunners are a dime a dozen, but at least get a 6cyl.

    And a trans cooler.

That said, 4x4 can be *extremely* helpful pulling a boat off a wet ramp....
