Exactly. It's less about what vehicle you have, and more about the things you do with it.

Dude I just have to say this not trying to bag on you but you must not be very old. When I was growing up Toyota’s were pretty shitty vehicles and NO one wanted to own one. They ran shitty and rusted right before your eyes. I haven’t owned nor driven a newer 4 cylinder Toyota so I can’t speak for them. Again not trying to rile you up brother.

No sweat bro. I’m not very old, but I’m getting there. I’m a child of the 80s. That is absolutely opposite of what I remember....Toyotas were- more expensive than their domestic competition, low hp and speeds, spartan accommodations, small, and inappropriate for a 1st date, depending on the girl or how you look at things. But they were disproportionately reliable when compared to their domestic counterparts, ran well, and of the many Toyota pickups I’ve cycled through, not a spot of rust. Some of that has to do with socal living, but I have an 01 that has spent quite a few winters in the northeast as well as a 17 (saw salty winters since 16) that are perfectly rust free, so far, in this region. I agree on a lot of things, but I’ve only come across one Toyota pickup that hopelessly ran rough, a first gen pickup that was mod-fucked, and I’ll have to disagree with that.

No problem and your right Toyota did get there shit together and they have not looked back since. Honda was another one made shitty cars when I was in my teens now look at them. Living in the Midwest my whole life you see it eat a lot of cars pretty fast probably why I get panicky right before winter each year. I did have a boss had a gen 1 Tacoma was a pretty sweet ride I have loved them ever since.

You don't think the fact that the V6 vastly outnumbers the I4 plays any role in the number of complaints/problems?

I think the I4 is likely to last longer. As someone who puts less than 15k a year on the truck, I really don't care. In 20 years when the difference might become apparent, either truck may no longer be viable. The V6 will have a lot more donor parts available if one wanted to keep it going too.

That being said, if I were single, I would've got the 2.7 5 spd...

No V6 owner ever said, "Dang! I should have got the 4 cylinder."

Not at all, as it’s always been the case, even back in the day when the I4s outnumbered the v6’s.

And the donor parts...eh. There is more parts availability globally and more support for the I4, it’s just not apparent here in NA.

Both engines are good, I’m not shitting Intentionally on the v6. But based on the history of the 4 bangers, and the new v6 config, I’m simply not going to buy the bs that the v6 “is just as” reliable. Because so far, and it’s still early, it isn’t. It’s still plenty fine.

I mean even if I4 and V6 has the exact same built quality, I4 will still be more reliable because it’s a simpler engine with less moving parts. This basically means there are less things to break down.

With that being said, IMO reliability of either engine doesn’t make a difference in the overall reliability of the truck. Both engines will outlast the rusting frame and they will most likely outlast the tranny as well.

Good point, and very diplomatic. Even IF you ignored the fact that the I4 is hand assembled in Japan (probably by skilled out-of-work sword smiths who live and die by a code of honor) and then shipped over after passing through meticulous quality control standards, you still have to consider that the v6 just has more failure points due to added tech.

The I4 is built this way not because of manufacturing or logistical reasons. It’s because Toyota knew that they still needed a truck configured with a certain engine that they could point to and say “see, these trucks can go a million...” And then they wrapped up the last I4 ‘17 TRUE SR5s

If you want to go cheap as possible. Just get the 2.7 2WD. It will do what it is rated for. It won’t be fast but the engine will do the work.

A member on here described his 2.7 as a little tractor engine, has a decent torque curve, low HP but creates higher torque.

I like the practicality of the SR base trim with a 4 cylinder. You are getting the same 'utility' as someone who spends thousands more.
But it's not for everyone. Mine? V6 4X4. Anything less and I'd be constantly thinking of trading up.

Not engine related, but would you ever see a need to load up your bike in the truck? I ask because my S1000R fits just fine in the back of the 5 foot bed with the tail gate down but something heavy with a long wheelbase that puts the wheel fully on the (not so strong) tailgate, like a full bagger, is gonna require the 6 foot bed which will narrow your used buying options a bit.

i'm less than 20k away from 300k in my 2016 4 banger. i can't answer your question because i have never been in a v6. if you plan on towing large things for distance frequently maybe get a tundra. i have minimal complaints with the 4banger auto access sr5 4x4.
