your gearing must be different... I can push second gear WAY past 30mph, definitely closer to 60. Something is wrong... bigger tires or gearing.

edit: just got back from a drive =) 1st gear bounces of rev limiter at 30mph, 2nd just above 60. so there ya go.

what's the difference btn 5 lug and 6 lug (aside from the obvious). i had someone ask me what i had and i wondered why one would ask that question. are there performance/mpg/power issues with one or the other?

The 5 lug mt has a 3.31 axle ratio, and short 27 inch 215/70x15 tires.

    The Prerunner 6 lug has a 4.10 axle, with 30 inch 245/75x16s.

Both have a .81 5th gear ratio. At 65 mph, the 5 lug combo should be turning 2169 rpm. The 6 lug should turn 2417.

I drove both, and liked the 4.10 gearing combo better. Easier to take off, you can creep along in first, and only when you get north of 2500 rpm, which is over 65, do you wish you had another gear, and that's if it's flat or downhill.

How these are rated the same for mpg I do not know..... I've gotten 20.8 and 21.5 so far in lead-footed mixed driving.

I tow a 2700#ish camper (tent trailer). I find I have no problems, I tow at 70 mph, usually in 5th. I have not yet encountered a strong enough wind that I had to slow down. I find that revving it up and accelerating quickly (4000rpm), the truck never struggles, and I get excellent mileage. Very happy so far. If you're someone who doesn't mind working the engine, you will be very happy with it. A lot of people never like to rev their vehicles, or push them ove 3K rpm. If that's you, get the 6.
Oh yeah, I'm a flatlander, my trip to the mountains went fine, but I was revving the snot out of it!

Local dealers don't like manual transmissions in anything other than standard cabs. My guy ordered my '10 back in July. It is scheduled to appear next week. He did it because I had purchased a 4cyl/5spd PreRunner from him 18 months ago -- had to order that one too. (Daughter had the cash. She's cruising Albuquerque NM with it now.)

    You might ask how could I buy what I did without driving -- or seeing! -- the thing. I have owned these Toyotas: '77 FJ-40 'Cruiser (6cyl/4spd), '86 RJ-70 'Cruiser (4cyl/5spd), '88 HJ-65 'Cruiser (6cyl turbodiesel/5spd), '88 4Runner (4cyl/5spd). Most recently, my kids have purchased that '08 PreRunner, a similar '09 PreRunner and an '09 Tacoma Access/2.7/5-speed.

My current truck is an '02 Ford Ranger 4cyl/5spd. The Ranger is a decent truck; a true fuel economy king. It served but I like Toyotas.

The current 2.7/5-speed Tacoma won't win fuel economy contests but it IS decent in that way. The kids have experienced numbers from 21 to 26 mpg. Driving technique, trip length and weather are the largest variables in generating those numbers.

We've learned how to tow heavier loads than the "book" suggests -- safely.

Power and performance are more than enough for us. We've learned not to do excessive mods, especially regarding wheel/tire diameter and wheel/tire assembly weight. Keep close to how Toyota's engineers figured things and your economy/power/speed won't suffer.

Fingers are sore . . . hope that helped!
