4 Cylinder versus V6

i'm love my V6 and all the power it has but i'm liking the 4 bangers more and more. i dont think those speeds or low weight will come close to stressing your engine

 

I've always had big trucks before the Taco. When looking this time, I asked myself how many times in the past 5 years I needed a 5000+ towing vehicle...the answer was "once". Hell, I can drive my little 4 cyl and RENT a big one when I need it and be money ahead.

Seriously, the 4 is one heck of an engine with plenty of snoose. The best freeway mileage for me is at 65-70.

 

sounds good, from what I found on line and in talking to the dealer and friends today, it sounds like I'll be happy with the 4 and the money in my pocket. Hopefully I'll be driving home in my new Tacoma on Tuesday.

Get what you want, that's what's important. I didn't even consider the 4 cyl simply because I knew I wouldn't be happy with it and when gas prices go down I'd be driving something I don't really like.

I picked up my my 4-cyl 5 speed manual access cab on Saturday. On my approval test drive I took it up the biggest long hill in Kansas City. At 70 MPH with about 600 lbs of passengers, I didnt have to even downshift out of 5th to maintain 70 up the hill, and the gas pedal was not all the way to the floor. I am VERY happy with my 4 cyl decision. The engine is very torquey down low. The truck drives very nice and it is so nice to have RWD again. The ride is better than my 05 Honda Accord. NO BS.

You will love your Taco no matter which engine you chose.

I find it tough to complain about acceleration. My first Toyota "Pickup" was listed as having a 0 to 60 time of 17.4 seconds! The new 4 cylinder Tacomas do it in half that.

 

I got the I4 for a number of reasons. Good engine history of reliability (not saying that the V6 is bad because it's not), lower initial cost, better mileage, and adequate for my needs towing capacity. I tow a small flat-bed utility trailer on which I'll haul a ton or so of hay (the trailer probably weighs less than 600#), and also pull a wave-runner/trailer combo which has a gross weight of 700#, so both are well within the towing capacity of the I4.

But my biggest reason for getting the I4 was simply because I wanted a very basic, no frills other than 4WD, Taco and they don't make a regular cab V6 anymore.....although that would be an awesome truck if they did! But the I4 has plenty of zip for my purposes, I'm not into drag racing and it'll cruise down the highway plenty fast for my needs.

 

My first Toyota truck was a '84 and a I4 with a 5 sp man.. I put a lift and oversized tires and a topper on it and it really never lacked for power that I remember. I never did pull anything with it either.

All of my trucks since have been V6 and the last two have been auto's. I only pull a 6X12 enclosed trailer but in the mountains I wouldn't want the I4 for this reason.

Sounds like you pretty much have your mind made up anyway.

 

Same with me, my first taco was 3rz (2.7 4banger). Although it was a great truck it def felt under powered. I also got shitty gas mileage with it about 16 mpg so when I got my next truck I knew I wanted a v6. Like Wilson said I am driving something I really love so in the end that's all that matters.

 

Prices might go down slightly for a month, say about Oct..

Regardless, I don't care. I will always drive what I want/can afford and I'm a LONG way off from not being able to afford it.

Just picked up my new 2008 Tacoma 4 cylinder access cab. Haven't pu tit to the test yet but the two hr ride home was more enjoyable than my 202 Subaru Outback sport and gave me better gass milage. Acceleration is just fine for me and they didn't charge me for power doors, windows and cruse control. I got a nice deal. Is there a thread I can look at for the best deals on AT tires?

 

Congrats on the new Taco. Is it the standard or Prerunner. Is is 2 or 4WD.

4wd 5 speed, I honestly don't know if it's the standard or the prerunner

 

Prerunners are 2wd with a 4wd suspension under them.

 

The V6 does not have enough low end torque for farm work. I was going to put a S/C on it, but now am worried about fuel availability.

 

I have driven 5X4`s with a 220 Cummins and no syncro. I am enjoying this auto. Plus, if wounded, I can drive it with one arm and one leg.
I used to road race an Austin Healy 3000.
I know about heel and toe brake. gears and throttle.
I have 5 manuals on the farm, counting the tractor.
