The original live announcement for the 2016 made it clear that the 4 cylinder would be offered with the new 6 speed automatic transmission.

Everyone went bonkers thinking that the simple and proven 4 cylinder / 5 speed combo would no longer be available.

So, "TorqueNews" dug into it and buttonholed some Toyota guys and got them to confirm that the 4 cylinder/5speed combo would continue to be offered to the relief of all the crusty dinosaurs (like me) on this thread.

But if you're looking for technological advancement and the best mpgs - you'll likely be more interested in the new four cylinder/ 6speed automatic configuration.

Somehow I'm not surprised that they'd keep this gearbox. It has a lot of the same issues it had 30 years ago, so why fix it now?

One rebuild on this dumb thing is my limit. Sorry Toyota, I'm not buying another one.

My 2.5 liter Mazda has 6 speed MT. On the freeway I'm most of the time in 6th gear. So you bet it is needed.

I don't understand how a torque converter (non-rigid coupling) can possibly be more efficient in transmitting torque than a clutch (rigid coupling). It's just not possible, unless the torque converter is "locked".

It's just a lot more fun.

Maybe I missed it but does anyone know they will make the 4cyl, 5sp manual, in a four door (crew cab)?
Or is it only the access cab like has been done in the recent past?

It would be nice to have a six speed on the 2.7l with a granny first gear. You could start off in second gear for everyday driving and have first for crawling and starting with a trailer.

I don't need a crawl box yet, but sometimes crawling over rocks it would be nice to have first gear in 4lo be even lower.

Overall, I love my 2.7 4x4 5 speed. However, the clutch pedal assembly is pretty sloppy. I'm sure many on here would agree with me.

If they don't change anything else for the new Taco, I hope they at least do a better job on the clutch pedal this time around.

I don't see why you would need a 6-speed in a 159hp engine anyway. So I don't know why people complain about the 5-speed.

Apparently the regular cab will return for 2016...
It's been a while so I don't quite recall where I read it.

Market response to the "stripped out" access cab configration may not have been all that Toyota desired. Who knows?

Traded the 2015 TRD Pro 6spd Supercharged on a PowerWagon and could not be happier. My 2011 Tacoma with the TX Baja package (Added by me) is still treating me great. My 1985 Toyota never skips a beat.
    1980 were mostly 4speed.

and the 5spd trans was a shitty modified 4speed design.

    I would definitely rather have a 5spd with 4cyl.

Cost. That is the aim of the current 4cyl. It is a reliable cheap truck.

A quick look on the window sticker, EPA rating, or Fuelly of the 4cyl 5spd 4x4 would have told you not to expect much better MPG that the v6 trucks in general. The v6 costs more.

The v6 6spd averages quite a bit less than the 4cyl 5spd compare those if you want justification other than cost and a little better MPG. That's a 30 percent real world jump.

I bet the new 6spd auto 4cyl truck in 2wd will see like 29 hwy and 21 city. Which would be great for the size, weight, and power available of the modern 2wd.

If you stay off the freeway, it's not that big a difference. I bet the 5AT v6 would match (or beat) my 4 cyl mileage on my driving route.

    v6 6spd 4x4 AC, 57 tanks, lifetime avg 21.6 mpg
    4cyl 5spd 4x4 AC, 87 tanks, lifetime avg 23.2 mpg

The 4 cyl's odometer was fast from the factory, like 4% or so. I changed the speedo gear to an N-30 and adjusted all tanks before the change down by that difference for a more accurate average. It's still a little faster than true but by less than 1/2%.

Maybe Toyota will come up with a revised head for the 2.7 soon so it can run direct injection. Just that change would be an easy bump in mileage and much-appreciated torque. Just look at the new direct injected Honda 2.4L - it makes 180 ft-lb - slightly more than our 2.7 truck engines. That tech on the 2.7 would push it north of 200 ft-lb easy, and that would be most improved at low engine speeds. Combined with a well-geared 6 speed that would keep a high gear on hills, yes it would get great mileage numbers.

Agree completely... and oddly at 62 years old and after having driven ONLY manuals for decades... I do find myself leaning towards an auto for the next one.

I bet this will happen...all the Advance Auto parts around me started buying 2wd reg cab Tacomas, since the Ranger is gone.

Now since all the 2014 reg cabs are gone, the AC's are being bought.... that's a big increase in price for no reason.

Fleet vehicle needs will bring the reg cab back, I'm sure

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
This is definitely good news. I myself wouldn't own a 4 cylinder truck without a manual. My 2011 was a manual and I loved that setup, just got tired of shifting every single day and wanted more room for my dogs so I got a double cab V6 auto.
