It varies province to province but as said above , yes there is tax , and we are paying on average about $4.25 / US Gallon

If I recall correctly, the Europeans are able to drive 60-mpg autos because of fewer regulations on diesel emissions. Regulatory burden places high barriers to entry in the automotive industry, suffocating innovation, especially at a time when innovation is needed the most. According to the Austrian Business Cycle Theory, economies emerge from recessions because resources are reallocated toward more efficient uses. This did not occur, therefore stagnation will persist.

Furthermore, the States seem to have an uncanny tendency, possibly a fetish, for the ridiculous. That is why people drive domestic automobiles and do not use metric. On that note, if my relatives in the more barbaric corners of the world can implement metric, there is no excuse for this country.

We were discussing this at work the other day. Do you understand how much money it would cost a large country such as the US to convert to the metric system? I can't even fathom the amount of both public and private dollars that would have to be spent to make the change. I think the metric system is much easier than the imperial system...however to switch over is a HUGE undertaking and would take many many years and cost probably trillions and trillions of dollars.

I wish that dumbass would just stop being a fucking fool and allow the permits to drill the gulf. This country cannot survive on green energy... face it.

Hey Canadians, you guys get imperial gallons of gas, which is 1.2 US gallons.

Doing the math, you pay $4.00 * (1/1.2) = $3.33 or $4.60 * (1/1.2) = $3.80. Still lame, but keep in mind it isn't as different as you think!

Open mouth, insert foot: According to poster above, your prices are against US gallons?

The matter of the US' propensity toward ridiculous things, including the archaic units, is a matter apart from an adaptation of the metric system itself. However, that is the logical conclusion of my argument, so I see no harm in addressing it.

As a libertarian, I am ideologically opposed to compelling people to adapt the metric system in the same way I would be opposed to telling someone to stop acting like a moron on his own property. In the meantime, the use of archaic units is quaint and amusing to more advanced peoples.

I would disagree that such an adaptation would be difficult in the least. Speedometers already display both miles and kilometres, and there is nothing that would prevent both from being displayed on road signs. Likewise, in grocery stores, the weight and volume of most foods are posted in both archaic and metric. If a transition absolutely had to occur, the British government distributed calculators to aid in the transition from £/s/d to decimal coinage and it seemed to work.

Oxford University designed a rear view mirror for that very purpose. It allows the nose to be positioned at a 60 degree angle or lower. :D

So you can go backwards but not forwards? That doesn't sound like a particularly good design.

Seriously though, I'm amazed you haven't been called out on talking down to everyone like a douchecanoe before.

    It has a back-up camera.

You did not address any portion of my counter-argument, or ask for clarification, especially for whichever portion ruffled your feathers.

I don't really care about the argument on metric. I'm more commenting on your pompous attitude where you think you're both better and smarter than me and others on this forum or in this country.

Newsflash: That's a lot of talk for a guy talking about "V4" engines, slick. ;)

I never said 'better' nor 'smarter'; I said 'more advanced'. I also made a concrete proposal whereby you may advance, should you desire. I consider transitioning from a medieval system of units to one that is more logical a criterion for being an advanced people; you may happen to disagree.

Furthermore, the US' use of the archaic units is a perennial joke among Europeans, Japanese, et. al.; that is the perception. If you want to shoot the messenger, you are doing a rather poor job.

Barring that, I hope this country enjoys the company of such luminaries as Burma and Liberia should it decide not to adopt metric. I think I have made my points herein.

Using a thesaurus only makes you seem smarter to people too dense to know the difference, buddy. Cut the shit and stop being an ass, that's all I'm saying.

Ah, arguing on the internet.... I'm done with it for today.

Fenrisulfr is correct in that only 3 countries in the world use standard/english units of measurement - US, Liberia and Myanmar (Burma). Everyone else uses what is now known as the "International" system of units, which is the modern form of the metric system. So why didn't the US switch when this matter first came up in the 1970s? Road signs and mile markers. It was a huge expense.

Regarding gas prices - oil is traded on international markets. It doesn't matter if it comes out of Saudi Arabia or the North Sea or Alaska. It all makes it to the international commodities markets, and that's where prices are being driven up on speculation that the unrest in the Middle East ... and in particular Libya ... will spread. The rich are getting richer on this. Prices on international markets skyrocketed again today.

The problem is the US can't afford these prices. Too many Americans living paycheck to paycheck as it is. Last time this happened, people started defaulting on their mortgages which led to the great recession of 2008. I think it's fair to say ... here we go again.

I think the major obstacle in the US moving from the standard (or archaic) system to metric is the almost impossible task of re-calibrating millions of automated machinery applications. A vast majority of them used by the construction industry.

Nobody is going to walk into a Home Depot looking for a 8-foot 2x4 and ask the vendor:

"Pardon me, good sir, I am in need of 2.438400 meters of 5.08 x 10.16 cm* pine, thank you."

    * Yes, I know that 2x4s aren't actually 2 inches by 4 inches, but the point is made.
