My concern was getting a flat in nowhere lands. I made the decision to purchase 5 tires and matching rims. I know my spare will fit. 275/70/R17.
It also fit in the spare tire area mounted underneath.

My son didn’t want to , but he knows I will lend him my spare. We carry the same size rims/tires and off-sets.

How many of you brought 4 or 5 tires and rims?

if the outer diameter is the same no issues (measuring at the tread)...I wouldn't put a set of wheels and tires on that were smaller/larger overall but some do, like those who offroad get really tall tires...in that case...just leave your 4wd off and don't activate the locking differential if it's on the rear if you need to use the spare. or buy a fifth. I plan to eventually get larger wheels but the tires will be so that the overall diameter (measured on the outside of the tire that is) is the same so my speedo will still be as accurate as it is now

the notion of "different size tires will ruin your xxx" comes from vehicles with lsd's...front, rear, and/or middle (many awd's have a center diff)...in those cases NO do not mix wheel sizes (again unless the overall outer diameter is the same)

otherwise the differential just adjusts...I've never heard any other reason not to put different overall diameter wheels on if it's not awd or lsd equipped...but I'm not saying that's a fact you understand. just my take

For those who put larger tires and rims. Is your spare tire the same size ? Can your spare rim fit after the lift?
TRD came with 16 inch rims, I purchase 17 inch rims. I wanted to be sure the spare tire did match and fit.
I got 5 tires and rims.

Did you buy 4 sets or 5 sets?
In Kona I see many lifted Tacomas, many have the factory spares only.

I have a matching tire and wheel for a spare. It was a tight fit underneath but I got it in there. I originally purchased the wheels and tires for a Bronco so I bought 5 because obviously the Bronco spare mount is visible.

There are an awful lot of Wrangler owners who are ditching their spare altogether. Especially those with oversize tires. Supposedly an oversized tire mounted where it is on a Wrangler makes a noticeable difference in how they drive and handle. I've had a few Wranglers over the years and wouldn't want to be without a spare.

That said, I started carrying a compressor, plugs and a tire repair kit years ago. In that time I've probably plugged at least 20 tires for myself and others and didn't have to resort to the spare. There were times when tire couldn't be saved, but the repair lasted long enough to get me to a tire shop. IMO that is a better plan than a spare.

I wouldn't worry about a 5th full size spare unless I was using 35" or larger tires. Very few people go larger than 33" on Tacoma's and the factory spare is close enough.

I use a full size spare and it has non-theoretically saved part of a trip.

I always have a full size spare, and will usually spend the money on a complete matching unit.

Just a thought here if the front tire is flat ( 33’s) and the spare tire is factory. Best place to run the spare? Front or back?
Maybe front, once on the highways?

Since my spare is underneath, I bought a 17" steel spare. I then mounted the 5th 265-70R17 to it. If it was mounted in a more prominent position then I would have got a matching rim as well.

My 32” barely fit under, I am surprised many do fit the 33s” under the bed, then again both are close in size.
