None of those factors are an issue other than perhaps loading down the bed.

I've got a shell. No difference in power or "butt dyno"... still getting 24.5-26mpg
My daily commute varies from 200ft to 1500ft elevation. I have 4 moderate grades. I am able to maintain 70 with the cruise set on all of them.
I took it to Austin and had no trouble maintaining 80 on any of the grades.

The 4 cylinder is a great engine. It's not going to win any races, and it's not going to tow a 26ft trailer (actually, a buddy used to tow his 22ft Boston Whaler cabin cruiser with his '88 4x4, it was a scary tow but it was handling issues and not power issues that were scary).

Dang .. I wander if they sell something similar to surge protectors but for cars, a device which would go inline after the antenna .. something like this:

    http://www.amazon.com/Coaxial-Lightning-Antenna-Protector-Amateur/dp/B00427MQKE

    would it help ?

Problem is the lack of a good earth ground, and those devices are generally useless against a direct strike. A direct strike has the energy to arc through thousands of feet of air... it's going to burn right through most protective devices. Protective devices are good at shunting moderate voltage levels from highly charged air from a near-strike.

Best case in a vehicle, you might shunt the charge to the chassis, but it's still going to build up a pulse then discharge to the ground across the tires or from the lowest point in the chassis.

Only thing you can do is unplug the antenna during a storm.

You will like it, thing I like about having a 4 is it is kinda unique, not everyone and their cousin's mom has one! Haha, I am sure in the future the 4 banger Taco will hold higher values than the V6 simply because they are not as common.

My first taco is a 2.7 with auto, and it has plenty of power, granted it's not a rocket ship.. loaded it with 3 guys and about 500 lbs of paintballing gear and took it to Iowa, and we had some steep grades to climb, had to switch to drive 3 for some of the real long ones, but I never heard the engine sound like it's working too hard, and didnt lose much speed going up the hills. On thet note I'm only running a 2wd so that probably helps my situation... When this one finally dies, or I have it paid off, I'll be looking for a 4wd one though.. prob a v6, just watching videos of them haul ass makes me want one.

I live in the foothills of the Birkshire's in NW Connecticut, not mountains but we've got some long winedy hills. I have a cap and I tow a 5'x10' utility trailer loaded with firewood regularly. I also keep plenty of tools and toys in the bed while towing, and have replaced the stock tires with 265 75 r16's.

It is not fast while doing this, but it will certainly get up to speed. Got a ticket 2 weeks ago going 83 on the highway.

The 4cyl is strong enough to do what you need and even to get in a little trouble. Not going to light the tires too well though. It is also a well built motor. Has a timing chain vs. the v6's timing belt. Doesn't need plugs or other maint till 100,000 mi. I am constantly amazed with its performance. She is a tank in the snow too. Have pulled several cars out of the ditch. I average 21 mpg with the cap and ladder rack, and getting on her quite a bit.

    It does now.
    The 1st Gen V6 had a belt, as did the Tundra/Sequoia/Lexus 4.7

Still only a 6 hour $350 job using basic hand tools... I could probably have done it again in 4 hours if I had kept the truck until it had 200k on it.

I had a 2010 four cylinder. It was not fun driving it on the interstate highway at highway speeds. Especially if there was any wind. i have since upgraded to a six cylinder 2012. It is much more to my liking.

I had the same hold up in my decision as you did. Ended up going the opposite way. Went with the 4.0 with an auto trans Absolutely love it. And I'm still getting 18.7MPG

Grats on the new taco purchase. Hopefully your trucks don't turn into the fella from the Great Outdoors that kept getting hit by lightning. :p

I ended up test driving a 4x4 reg cab 4cyl and was suprised with how much power it had. It also got 27mpg in my driving back/forth to work which is mostly highway driving.

After the lift, I re-geared to 4.88's and put on a header and the truck has just as much power now as it did when it was stock. I love it. I love the gas mileage, and the look of the Reg cab (I Have a yukon for a people/toy hauler if I need it). Looking back on my purchase, I probably would have bought a doublecab v6 4x4 if I didn't care about price. Only because I would love to take the entire family wheeling. However I knew that I would never use the back seat for anything other then that as I only drive it back and forth to work. The price point on the 4cyl 4x4 was over 10k less then a doublecab 4x4 v6. The decision was a no brainer for me.
