I'll take option #3 ... 4 wheels and 5 tires. This is assuming you're going to a larger diameter tire. Mount the 5th tire to your existing spare. Even if you're going up to 17" wheels from 16's there is a 16" equivalent tire, so your tires are all the same diameter.

Years ago, and the one time I bought aftermarket wheels, I was in need of a replacement, only to find they were discontinued. I had to pay through the nose to source one from ebay.
    Lesson learned.

I like that, never thought of it this way. I'm staying with 16inch rims I think I might go with the KMC Impact 16

Other mods might force you to get a matching 5th wheels or at least something with the same backspacing as the new wheels. I went with the archive garage shock relocation and the oem spare would need a spacer to clear the shocks. I went with 5 matching wheels. I got a blem for the 5th wheel since it's going to mount under the bed anyway.

Also, nowadays, a 17" tire is more common so they are easier to find if you blow a tire out of town.

I did 5 , incase I have a flat and wanted to be able to use the same lugs instead of having to keep 2 different kind handy using the stock spare. And these are 16 Impact

Not sure if I'm responding correctly. When I was able physically to do winter and summer change overs myself. I bought nice aftermarket wheels and mounted nice tires for summer. I took off oem tires from stock wheels and mounted good winter tires for winter. Sold stock tires on line if they were still good.

On a Tacoma I'd buy 4 tires and 4 wheels, you can't see the spare and you can't keep it clean. On a Jeep Wrangler where the spare is visible and easy to get to, I'd buy 5 and 5 and do a 5 way rotation.

On a truck I always keep one of my old tires when buying new and have the tire shop mount it to the spare tire spot. This rotation keeps a fairly new tire for the spare and it's the same size.

Unless I were going up significantly larger than stock I'd not worry about having a spare the same size. If it's within 1-2" of the same diameter as the 4 on the ground that's close enough.

i should really source a 5th wheel for my Tacoma. then I could do 5 wheel rotations. but i also recently dropped my stock spare and a 245 to my 285 could be an issue if I ever needed to try and wheel out of a bad spot

I'll be sticking with 16inch rims, so 4 rims and 5 new tires, I think the spare tire will be upgraded

I do all 5 tires and rims. Do a 5-tire rotation. Don't see a whole lot of difference in looks on the spare when mounted on the truck.

5 matching tires and wheels for a 5 tire rotation. Any size tire will get you home if you have a flat on the side of a road. But, you will want a matching (rotated) spare tire if you have a tire blow out on the trail. Different size tires are a bad idea when 4WD is engaged. Plus, the 5 tire rotation will end up getting more miles overall than a simple 4 tire rotation.

4 tires and wheels. If you know how to plug a tire and carry a pump. In the last 25 years across all my vehicles, I have used a spare wheel/donut 1 time, and have had more sets of tires than i can count. Its worth the gamble. Im pretty sure I have put a plug in almost every set of tires I have owned.

In that case, it's up to you. Buying a matching spare tire/wheel/TPMS sensor is an added expense. But, you should have a spare, it's just do you want to spend the extra money or not. But you can have a total road blowout that shreds your tire. If you had a matching spare, then you might not have to purchase more than one surprise tire.
