I am telling you its that switch that tells system 4x4 is ON. Just check all of them and one of them will most likely be jamming.

I understand what your saying but here's what happened in my situation. I pulled out of the woods in 4hi switched to 2hi, light goes out truck goes into 2hi. drive 30 miles back home shut the truck off. next day drive to my buddy's house, leave my buddies house and the 4wd light is blinking at me.

going to look into it this week.

Recently dealt with the blinking 4wd light while on a trail (almost got super stuck). anyways, came home with the light still blinking and shut the truck off for the night. i couldnt get it to shift OUT of 4wd. the next day i turned my truck on to pull it in the garage and it shifted out right away with a click. i then put it in and out several times without a problem. My question is i was hitting the actuator a bunch with a rubber mallot and broke the nipple with the small rubber hose connected to it off......like an idiot. Is this just a breather tube?

Sounds like it, and this is something
    1. You gonna have to somehow fix.
    2. Toyota does not sell them as separate parts.

Im having the same issue as nj636. Every morning, the 4lo light is blinking at me but im in 2wd and the light goes out after about 5 mintues of driving. I have not engaged 4wd once a month, need to start doing that. I will check the sensors/switch and see what happens.

I ended up doing nothing about the issue besides use 4wd more often and it fixed itself.

Hey y'all I have the same issues with the 4x4 light and engagement process. Can anyone post a picture of what sensors to inspect and what a stuck sensor will look like? I will change the fluids in the front differential and transfer case..Q what are the best fluids to use? Central Indiana climate.

It’s your ADD actuator. It’s always the ADD actuator. Pull the actuator, dry it out, clean it up, solder the connections and put some dielectric in it and RTV it back shut. Should be good forever after that. Do yourself a favor and loosen the front diff bracket to drop the diff a bit, makes getting the actuator out less profanity inducing. Check out my post here it’s a good start
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/4wd-issues-again-advice-needed.615788/#post-21224915
Edit: If your ADD is beyond repair and you end up buying a new one do yourself the favor and take it apart and rtv it before you install. The one in the picture on the post I referenced is not even a year old. They suck from the factory and absorb water like it’s their job.

I have had this same issue for sometime as well on my 2007 trd or . Diff fluid swapped, pulled the ADD actuator out, re-soldered the connections, and even tested it for power and was functioning. Still a non-stop flashing 4x4 light on 4x2, 4x4 hi, 4x4 lo. Have been stumped for a while. May just need to take it in to a mechanic for a deeper diagnosis.

@tacomaluv69. If it’s not your ADD I would check the two 4WD sensors on the top of your transfer case. I’d take pictures of the location but I’m a few states away from my taco at present. If those are bad or have a faulty connection then you will get the same sort of symptoms.

Try and use it for a few miles monthly. I try and think about it when i am on a straight run (thruway) on a rainly day. It had been somewhat more finicky when i haven't used it for months at a time, and noticably smoother in engaging when i have been better about it.

I'm wondering if it makes a difference if you put the truck in neutral first then engage the four wheel drive....once engaged put the tranny in drive.

I’m having similiar issues. I switch in to 4wd, it does engage, but the light keeps blinking. It’s in 4wd but doesn’t know it. Because it doesn’t think it’s in 4wd I can’t get into 4 low. If I turn off 4wd light keeps blinking and it stays in 4wd. Only way to get it back in 2 is to kill the engine restart it and then I hear it go back into 2 and the light stops blinking. Anyone? Hoping just a bad or gummed up switch, I already changed oil.

Now that’s interesting. Doesn’t sound like the typical ADD that is alarmingly common on our trucks. Are you positive 4WD is engaging? I’d swap out the tcase indicator switches first to see if that’s the issue.

Yes, 4wd does engage I have still been using it in the snow when I absolutely have to. Going to check switches this weekend.

Not for 4H, its a shift on the fly system, no need to put it in neutral before engaging 4H. If mine doesnt click in with in a few seconds, I will remove my foot off the gas till i get a solid light and feel the slight thump of it engaging. Now shifting into 4L you will need to be in P or N, I have had issues with 4L locking in, but I actuate the system alot more often than I used to so mine is normally really smooth going into either.
